Front End Question
« on: Jan 29, 2013, 05:48:52 PM »
I'm just wondering what everyone is running for steering arm studs.
I'm running Marlin arms, the old All Pro spacer with longer studs, 37" Iroks on 10" wheels with 3 1/2" of backspacing. On MLK Jr. weekend I think my trunion bearing failed first while wheelin and I broke the studs. Had all the parts to fix, but I'm looking to rebuild both knuckles and carry spares. So what is the hot set up ?

I like the 5th stud mod. Looks beefy

I ran arp's for years and never had an issue. but would tighten then at least once a day on the trail. Now I run 6 shooters and trunion elims and have never had a prob either.

I've been looking at the eliminator set up. How often do you need to grease it? The extra width is probably a big part of the problem and cleaning bearings out of the birf is a dirty job on the side of a trail.

Here is a good write up from someone who has run them for a while. I grease them every other trip. but that may be overkill.

I run the six shooters with arp studs. I check them regularly but they are never loose.

Ordering the eliminator kit and ARPs. If it doesn't hold up the six shooter will be next, but I'm thinking I'll be good.

Good call. Just make sure you torque the studs religiously.

Most people that generally have issues, tend to forget this step.

I've also read posts about how some people have broken six shooters too!!

All Pro arms with ARP studs. I check the torque before every run. I've never had an issue .
Time to go wheelin!

I carry a 17mm wrench in the consol for this reason, check the studs at air down. We went wheeling in the desert and I think the high speeds on washboards is what took it out. With the price of the kit with ARP's I'll definitely be watching them.

Unless they have changed the eliminator kit will not work on the Marlin arms without some modifications made. The pin on the TG kit are 3/4 inch that press into the arms, the holes on the arms are 1 inch. You will need to have some reducer bushings made and pressed into the arms in order to press the eliminator into the arms.

Good to know. Hopefully parts will be here today. I'll be looking for a machine shop in Bakersfield if that's the case.

Oops is corect that the pins are different. I'll be trying the bearing house by work to see if they have something that will work first. I'll post the part # if I get lucky.

Back from the machine shop. Left the bushing long so I can put a normal zerk in it and be protected.
