I've seen them shaved more than 50 thousandths, but I really need to ask Marlin for a professional answer.

I do know that a 20R has to be shaved approx. 160 thousandths to fit onto a 1985+ (short) 22R engine block, so maybe you can shave the crap out of a 22R head as well.

BTW, what year 22R head are we talking about?

:smack: I was waayy off. I asked Marlin and he believes the book says the max. is 0.012" (12 thousandths).

He has done one at 40 thous. and he said the job didn't last and the head soon warped.

Good Luck

My 91 detonates sometimes runnin 87 octane, I can't imagine you could shave much before premium was your only option....

anything more than .020 and you need a thicker head gasket or a shim. engnbldr.com can get you either or both.

:nonono:  I have shaved 20r heads an amount that I would rather keep as my little trade secret, but if you shave too much off of your efi engine you will cause your knock sensor to pick up combustion noise causing the ECM to severly retard your ignition timing.
To go any more than the factory spec, you need to move the knock sensor, and will be stuck running premium fuel.
If you are doing it to repair your current head, just buy a new one. contact cylinder heads international. If you are trying to obtain more power, consider other options and think about current gas prices before you make a decision.

I have been woundering the same, I have an 85 22re with an lc head on it with 2mm over sized valves and a TRD stage 2 cam, need to fix an oil leak at the top of the timing cover the only real way is to redo the head gasket so I thought while I was at it have the head shaved for some added compression.  So I don't know of the factory specs will aply with bigger valves and cam?
Rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Keep in mind that when you shave the head you are changing the distance from centerline of the cam to centerline of the crank , thus affecting cam timing. If you shave much you need an adjustable cam gear to get cam timing right. If your looking for more power try something else . I doubt that the power gain from shaving the head is worth the trouble.  :twocents: I can honestly tell you from experience that with a 22r head it is not a great power gain and not a all worth the trouble, you should buy and adjustable timing gear anyway it is fun to tinker with. If you advance the cam 2 deg. it will run like a diesel, with a butt load of low end torque.
