Somebody more of an expert can aswer this better, but the short answer is no, they are not interchangeable. (at least not easily). The 22R head does not have quite the same mounting surface/bolt pattern for the intake manifold. I believe there is a valve clearance issue too...

Anyone else want to field this better?

I don't think he is changing the head, just the EFI  components  :dunno: If that is the case I believe that can be done.

I don't think you can use a 22r head with a 22re block or visa-versa without major mods since you cannot put a 20r head on a 22re without mods. If you are using the 22r head with the 22r block and want to know if you can just bolt the EFI up to it that I don't know.

ok so i am having a 22r motor rebuilt and i have a 22re in my truck right now, will i be able to take off all of the efi stuff off the 22re and will it bolt right onto the 22r head? i no the blocks are the same but are the heads interchangable?

lets deal with it one step at a time.

1.will i be able to take off all of the efi stuff off the 22re and will it bolt right onto the 22r head?

It might.  The difference is an 8mm mounting hole near the center(IIRC).  Just compare the EFI manifold to the carbed manifold. This can be done easily, just pull the air cleaner off and have a look.  If its not there, grab a drill and a tap.

2.i no the blocks are the same

This is not true.  81-84 blocks are the same and the 85-95 blocks are the same.  The early block is taller than the later one.

3.are the heads interchangable?

Between different years, like putting an 88 head on an 83 block?  It can be done, but it takes a little work to get the timing chain to the proper length, and you have to make sure to use the late model pistons, as the combustions chambers are shaped differently(read as: early pistons will slam into the late model head)

It is however, doable.  Hope that helps.

if it is a late 83 or 84 head it will be drilled and tapped for both the carb and efi manifold.
if it is an earlier head then you will have to drill and tap it yourself to be able to bolt on the efi manifold.
if i remember correctly it is only 2 bolts that are different.
