So, this morning I just happen to look at "Users Online" at the bottom of the main forum page. And some of the screen names looked kinda funny. So, I clicked on them, and of course Spammers. But they haven't spammed yet, just signing up.

What caught my eye, was one with the name Spooge in it!!

Thorkabrard his one of them, and is online right now, who is advertising Vaporizers!!

they seem to be everywhere at the moment... all boards i go to .. sucks and is stupid, just a waste of space........

now what i hate, is the aol/aim text messages i got from 4 AM to 10 AM the other day........That pissed me off

After a lot of work with some conflicting modifications, both our forum and our store website are now connected to the StopForumSpam.com database

You can even see us on their rank page: http://www.stopforumspam.com/contributors You'll have to use your browser's search feature to find us. We are about half way down the page, but already in just a few days we've passed up a lot of other sites. We should move up pretty well thanks to how much traffic we receive.

I've also reconfigured the forum registration, now using very specific Marlin Crawler and Rock Crawling challenge questions that I will update every month. This will prevent 100% of all automated spam bots, and weed out human spammers who don't wish to research for the answers. Already you can see this has made a HUGE impact on the number of our registrations: http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?action=stats Scroll down and look at the New Member count for today. Its nearly dropped off the universe! Those were all 90% spammers

Currently I am working on an automated script that will scan current members that have zero post counts and then compare their vitals against the SFS DB. I've already got this running on our store website, currently scanning 50 accounts every 3 hours.

Earlier this week I noticed this too. We had at one time over 20 spammers logged into on our store website.

You might be wondering why or how are they trying to spam a store, and the answer is that we use a popular content management system that has many networking features such as a type of bulletin board system, commenting system, and blogging system. We of course don't do any of that (that's why we have this forum) so those modules were disabled the day I setup the website.

Having said this however, you should have seen our error log. Bunch of access denied entries for users trying to create blogs, replying to non-existent blog entries, posting to a BBS that doesn't exist, et cetera. Most of it just started happening within the past week.

That's when I went to work to eliminate them all. I posted a nice warning message on the registration landing page: https://www.marlincrawler.com/user/register (if you are logged in to our site then it will throw an error at the bottom because, well, you are already registered). The relevant info is after the number 2:

What tips them off, is the fact that they are here a very short time, and they have all these links, address's, and such in their profile. And a strange town as to their location. Really Vatican City?? Why not Dufur, or Duluth.

I think Cheesy is a spammer, I clicked on his link and they sold me a flapjack maker for 19.99, in fact they gave me a second one for free (just pay separate processing and handling)
