GM Alternator Upgrade Wiring Question
« on: Dec 02, 2012, 08:25:17 PM »
I upgraded to a Powermaster 140amp GM 12si 3-wire and am plan to wire as shown in the below link.
http://www.rocketcityrockcrawlers.com/memberstuff/al/85%20Toyota%204Runner%20alternator%20Upgrade%20Project.pdf

However, my question is on upgrading the OEM 8ga wiring to the stock 80amp fuse with a 6ga.  Based on everything i've read it seems i need to keep the stock alternator wire connected to the 80amp fuse in order to power the 40amp fuse down the line and to keep all the ACC stuff powered. Is this true?  Or can I upgrade the wire and leave off the wire that use to power the alternator?  I would rather not have a random hot wire that i do not plan on connecting to the alternator since I am running a brand new 2ga line straight to the battery with its own 175amp fuse.

Here's a picture of the stock alternator wire coming off of the 80amp fuse:

Here's a picture of the stock 8ga wire coming from the battery to the 80amp fuse (other side of the fuse):

Do I upgrade to the 6ga wire by cliping the wire to the plate (shown in the 2nd picture) and bolting on the new wire with a lug?

Also, the diagram in the first link says to splice the new 6ga wire that goes to the stock 80amp fuse into the new 4 ga wire after the 175amp fuse.  Can I just wire the 6ga directly to the battery since its going to the 80amp fuse or is it preferred to wire it this way?

I read alittle but make sure you put the inline fuse to the battery from the alt. this helps if things get funky later on down the road.  looks like your there though, 3 wires the best because you can still use the Batt light

yes, I'm close.  I've done a bunch of research to get where I'm at, but I'm not finished.  I'm also installing dual batteries with the Tmax kit at the same time.  That part is pretty cut and dry, but the alternator is stumping me.  Can anyone help me with my questions?
