1A transfer case
« on: Mar 05, 2005, 05:11:17 AM »
I recently bought a 1982 4x4 Toyota pick-up. This strange beast has an 18R engine, an L43 gearbox and a 1-A transfer case. This configuration is apparently standard in Europe! I have a question that no amount of combing the "records" has provided the answer for. What is the difference between the 1-A and the 1-B transfer cases, and what gearboxes are compatable with this transfer case? I am going to convert to diesel 5 speed as soon as I can, (it's much cheaper, and I spent ten years as a diesel mechanic, I'm more at home with them than petrol engines!)I need to know what bolts to what! This is the first essential, other mods later! Do you have a European outlet for you "special" Toyota parts?

Thanks in advance, Matthew

I'm sure Marlin will know about the 'A' transfercases but I've never heard of them.

Sounds interesting, could you take a couple pictures of them?

Thanks!

If you're using a 2.8 liter 3L or the 3.0 liter 5L, both NA, they'll bolt to a G52/G54, and W56 gearbox using the stock diesel bellhousing.

There is a bellhousing that'll allow you to bolt a L series diesel to the R series gearbox. Not so prevalent.

If you use a 1KZ-T or 1KZ-TE and stock bellhousing you can bolt a R151F gearbox to it sourced from: a 22R-TE (gear driven Tcase), a 1KZ (chain driven Tcase), or the 3.0 liter v6 (chain driven Tcase). The R151F from a 3.4 liter v6 will not bolt to a 1KZ or L series diesel, regardless of the bellhousing as it's input shaft is 190 mm versus 160 mm (some say 165 mm).
