Hello everyone I just signed up in hopes that Ill find some help here I just picked up a 1981 Toyota 4x4 pickup and had a few question as to this is my first Toyota truck. OK I will try to keep this short, I got the truck from a tow yard it was a stolen recover the exhaust manifold and crab are missing, it has an offenhauser intake on it. I have done a compression test on it and getting between 120 and 130 on all four, So here is where I'm looking for help is that about right and if so can I put a stock crab on it or should I go to a Weber? Stock exhaust manifold or header? Some people have told me that I wont gain enough power for the amount of money I spend... Also any info on good on-line places for parts, outside of junk yards there is not much local for these older yotas.  :dunno:

Thanks to any info you can help with.

Welcome to the board and to the timex of vehicles

The comp numbers are on the low side, and should come up when warm, a valve adjustment could also improve the numbers as well.

Since you are new to Toyota's, I would just put a stock exhaust manifold, until you get an idea of where you want better performance to be, i.e. low end or high end.  With you in the process of trying to get the truck running, I would start with a new carb. to eliminate any headaches that you would get with a used one.  A weber carb. would be fine, a lot run them.

Rockauto.com is pretty fair w/prices, but shipping and handling is a bit high, so try to buy as many parts as possible from one of the suppliers as you can.  I have used www.davezoffroadperformance.com, www.oly4x4.com in the past for used parts.  For engine parts, www.engnbldr.com is about your best bet, partsdinosaur.com is also pretty good as well.

If you haven't come across it yet, there is s tech section for your truck in the Toyota Pickup/4Runner Tech 79-95 section.

Thank you very much for the info, I have looked into the weber a little more since I posted and the only thing Im really conserned about is my truck has a ton of vacuume lines and on the pics of trucks I have seen with the weber on it they have only a couple. I guess Ill have to get a diagram of the system and see what is what.

Thanks again

I would like to put some pics on here so you can see what Im dealing with but have not been able to figure out how... also is there an area on this site to locate local clubs or people in the area?

For picture posting, it is best to use a free picture hosting site such as photo bucket.com, imagebam.com, etc.  You first upload pics to the host site, then link the pics to your posts.  This will allow you to post pics w/o being limited to file size, or minimum number of posts.

There is a "New Member Check-In!" section for you to introduce yourself to fellow members, you might search the older posts and see if there are any new members from Vegas as well.  There is also a section on the home page called '4WD Club Corner", where you might find clubs or members in your area.

There are online Factory Service Manuals available for download, some cost as little as $10.  There are few available for free here on the forum, but I don't think there are any for the 1st gen.

it looks like that motor just had a rebuild.... its clean as poo!   look on the bottom side of the manifold and find the casting number, then get on a offenhauser site and find what carb the manifold is made for, It may be direct for a weber or it may be for something else. But once you find that out you will be able to get the right carb,
You do not need any of the vacuum lines.
Or any of the egr stuff. theres block off plate kits but you can make your own for allot cheaper. but remove all of that stuff or plug it off. remove that metal vacuum routing thing and just use one long rubber hose  direct from carb to dizz.  Ill snap a pic of my engine bay for an example
the only lines you need are   One hose from the distributor to the carb (weber)  you will only need to use one port on the Dizz, the other is a advance for emissions crap dont need it.  next is your fuel line direct from your fuel pump strait to the weber.    thats it!  throttle linkage and fire that thing up.

also one from the pcv valve to the manifold

By doing away with all that I won't have any issues with passing smog?

ehh different story. are you sure you need to smog a truck that old there, I thought there was a break in the smog if a vehicle was a certain year old. idnk,   the egr is pretty strait forward  and need a few hoses to operate, and you need to keep the two on the dizz then, Ill go snap a pic of my hood sticker should have all the info you need

81yota4x4

Yeah 1968 and up have to pass smog every year, I would really appreciate a pic as mine is gone. Ofcorse I am still looking for parts I never dreamed parts would be so hard to find... I called a local yard here by the name of All Japanesse and the guy literally laughed at me on the phone.

did you find the casting number?   so you need a weber?   I have a complete manifold if interested with lc adaptor

81yota4x4

I have not had a chance to look for the casting number, the manifold thats on the truck looks like its new so really just need the carb. I found a guy local here that has a couple for around 40 to 50 bucks going to go check them out thus weekend but still looking for an exhust manifold If you know anyone selling one...

where are you from?? cali I'm guessing if so dont toss those vaccuum lines.  you'll need a stock 22R carb from what I hear from the guys who live there.

your compression numbers are very low.  try a little atf in the cylinders then see if it raises the compression.   just a teaspoon or two.

it may need new rings.

I also recommend a header and 2 1/4 inch exhaust,  the power gained esp getting on the freeway is well worth it.  a performance cam with .430-.440 lift is also a great improvement.
D&J rock is a great parts source but you'll have to buy through Engnbldr or a local machine shop as they dont sell to the public.

I rebuilt my son in laws 22RE last year for under $500 in parts.  this included new pistons :)

I'm in las Vegas NV, I'm probably going to do a ring job since I have to pull the head anyway... Who ever had the truck before me stripped the #1 and 2 spark pug holes so I'll bro ably end up going through it all. Where are you from?

you might need a new head.  find a good machine shop and they can probably fix it
OR put a timesert in the holes but use some red lock tight on the insert so it doesnt come out of the head.

I have a friend with a F250 Excursion with the v10, it keeps spitting out sparkplugs :ack:

from Arkansas

check the piston to cylinder wall clearance when you pull the head if you can look down past it and see the rings you should have it bored and new larger pistons installed.   a good tight 22R should have 170-185 lbs of compression.
