Slave cylinders different/make a difference??
« on: Aug 26, 2012, 03:24:25 PM »
On my 86 Toyota truck 4x4 2.4 5speed the clutch MC and slave cylinders were changed two months ago. Also added Redline MT-90 and put in new seat and shifter bushing.Shifted great for the past two months, but now there is intermttent tough shifting into first & second gears. This truck use to be a turbo and I'm wondering if the MC and slave cylinders are different on the turbo and non-turbo 86 4x4?Would it make a difference on the anount of throw on the rods?Clutch bracket seems good, though rusty.Pedal seems good.

I do know the R151F and W/G Series input shafts r not the same lengths. look up the parts and see if they share the same P/N.

The clutch and slave cylinders are the same for R, RE and RTE!

You can put any 4 cyl tranny behind any 20/22R series motors.   You can put any L,G W or R151F series trans behind a 4 cyl.

Any more thoughts on what would cause the intermittent hard shifting into first and second?Could it be a bad rubber hose by the slave?..Just checked under the dash with a flashlight and I see a previous weld around a stud above the cotter key and to the left on the clutch bracket seems broken. Not mechanical at all so hopefully can find someone in this motherlode area of California who will take it out reweld it and install. What's the best welding method with pics if possible or the OEM number for the bracket in case I need a new one?...thanks.

Generally, first and reverse is hard to get into gear.  Since they don't have synchro's.  My truck I have to RPM match the the gears to get it into first from second while moving.  And sometimes, I have to put it in Neutral and release the clutch to get it to fall into Reverse.

Sometimes its hard to get into second for me, but its usually because I don't have the clutch all the way in, or its cold out, and the trans hasn't heated up.

Can't really get it into first most of the time after starting the truck. There appears to be a small crack in the weld itself on a stud in the clutch bracket.I can move the clutch pedal by hand side to side about 1/4 inch-1/2 inch and when doing this it will make a creaking sound.
