Sequoia and kings canyon?
« on: Aug 21, 2012, 03:07:10 PM »

I'm headed up there in a couple weeks just wondering if there's any good wheeling in the parks? I've never been to either so I figured I would ask. I searched and didnt really come up with too much info so I'm thinking the answer is no...

Thanks, John

The only thing I can think of is the Buck Rock trail which will take you up to the Buck Rock Lookout but its more than a fireroad with a few rocks from what I've heard. The Central Valley Crawlers (an official TLCA chapter club) has adopted the trail, so you might try asking them about it here http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?board=104

ELEVATION: 8500 FEET
SEQUOIA NATIONAL FOREST

I've never been on the trail so I don't know anything about it other than it's the closest trail to go wheeling if you live in the Visalia area

Buck rock is fun.  Not much of a challenge though.  I like 13S05.  We call it Camp 7 rd.  It follows the path of the Hume Bennet lumber companies railroad.  It goes out along the edge of the canyon, and the veiws are spectacular.  There are some places where the railroad ties are still visable.  If you start at the Hume lake end, and follow it to the very end, you can see some parts of the old rail trussle, and wood stacked to feed the engines.  Also, at the very end of the trail there is a Donkey Engine (winch) left from the lumber operation.  It must be accesed on foot however.  The road also passes through two named giant sequioa groves.  The brush is tight in many places, the wheeling is not challangeing, I would download the MVUM.  There is also a trail starting at Cherry gap.  And if you are into waterfalls and swimming holes, there is an awesome one in the canyon no 4x4 required for that though but you have to cross the Kings river so in early season you must be a strong swimmer.
None of this is extreme wheeling, and please stay on the trail.

Stop by the Squaw Valley ranger station and ask for the Hume Lake Ranger District "Motor Vehicle Opportunity Guide".  It's a map which shows all the trails in the area.

My boys(14 & 17)and I like Buck rock lookout, been there three times. One time after going up the lookout we drove the Buckrock Jeep Trail. When you come out of the lookout gate look left and you will see a big yellow sign, that's the start of the trail. It's mostly easy, but there is a challenging hill if you go left at the fork(the sign says left difficult and right easy). It has a bypass too. My mom is a campground host in the area,so when we go visit her we find something to do during the day.
