Cheapest 17s
« on: Jun 25, 2012, 12:13:14 PM »
I see that most people are ditching their 15" rims in favor of 17". I'm thinking about giving into this fad. Who sells the cheapest 17" steelies?

Probably the pro comps from 4wheel parts.  http://www.4wheelparts.com/Wheels/52-Rock-Crawler-Series-Gloss-Black-Powder-Wheels.aspx?t_c=11&t_s=209&t_pt=100021&t_pl=100347&t_pn=PCW52-7883R2.5

I think most people go with 17s because nobody makes any tires bigger than 35" for a 15"rim anymore.

ive been looking into this as well. seems you can still get tires in a 15" wheel but 17s are quickly becoming the new 15" wheel. I looked at a set on summit, crager soft 8s 17x9 i think were 92 a wheel.

Maxis still sells the creepy crawler in 15" I believe but I'm leaning more towards 37" mtr kevlars.

Wondering the same thing why is everyone ditching thier 15 for 17? 15in tires are way cheaper and more sidewall with a 15 would make for a softer ride on the trail?? And dude 37s look like there's no room for flex, just gonna rub?? :-\

Link didn't work, but go to their site and look up 17" wheels in 6x5.5" lug pattern and the first option should be the black uniques.

I took a look at my invoice from america's tires and found out that they charged me 85.00 per wheel when they quoted me 95.00.

Here is why 17's are better than 15's. LESS SIDEWALL. Why is less sidewall better you say ? Well when you are aired down on the trail and you turn your tires you will see that your rim will actually start to turn first before the tire. With a smaller rim and a huge tire with lots of sidewall you lose turning ability due to tons of sidewall wash. Yeah the ride might be slightly more cushy but you would never notice it unless you hit a bump so hard that it smashes into the rim. So basically with a larger rim you still keep your ground clearance with bigger tires but dont have the draw backs of a small rim.

Yeah that totally makes sense and I understand now. But is it worth the extra $100 per tire and $50 per wheel?! That's $600 difference per set!

I know right. Whyd the tire companies go and screw us over! Probably some ploy to get more money lol. But honestly if the MTR was still available in 37/12.5/15 we wouldn't even be having this conversation ;)

The theory behind 17s is sidewall stability.  It really came from the 37in Krawler and it's development (from what I understand).  BFG was looking to optimize sidewall flex as well as side load stability in off camber/turning situations.  The 17 was the best compromise.  Now, when you step up to a 39 or 40 inch tire, you really need a rim that is something like 18 or larger to retain the same stability and performance.  Aftermarket companies obviously don't supply odd ball sizes like that, so companies are limited to 17s or 20s.  Notice that the new 42in Krawler ONLY comes in a 20in rim?  Well, it's not because BFG wanted their sponsored drivers looking like ballers, it's because it needed it in order to retain performance.

Another cheap 17 you could get would be some factory later model toy wheels off Craigslist and just run wheel spacers. I see them all the time for 100-200 a set, usually alloy
