Hello , I'm no nOob !
I have found little on how to find out what gears came stock in thaw truck by what code u have in yor door!
So here's mine , What gears do I have

Thanks

That tag is not the one that tells you the axle information, the one under the hood against the firewall is the one to look for that. Use the link below and it will give you everything you want to know.

no tag , it looks like the truck was in a fender  bender , and the tag is missing , there is just holes there  :(

Snowtoy

The tag is on the center of the firewall(back of engine bay below the windshield), not the fender.

With it being an '81 if nobody swapped in taller gears for taller tires, you should have 4.10's.
'90 black X-cab mod'd 3.0, 33's/4.88's, rear ARB, custom bumpers, sliders, safari rack, etc.
'91 Blue X-cab 22re, 35's/5.29's,Truetrac front, ARB rear, dual cases, and custom Safari flatbed, bumper, interior.

I am Sure this is where the tag is suppost to be !
And this is where my old tag was in my 1980
Can I get a replacement ?

Sparkplug

1981 toyotas had dual timing chains and 3.90 gears, not 4.10. They are the only year to have 3.90. Also the only dual chain 22r, and last year of round headlights.

Those are the least desirable ratio, and can be easily identified by a red pinion nut.
2008 TRD 4x4 Double Cab Tacoma
1994 12 valve 5 speed 4x4 single cab dodge 2500
1986 22re 5speed 3link 4runner (the beater)
1982 3rz swapped pickup (in progress)

i believe on 1st gens that tag is on the passenger side inner fender and on 2nd gens it is on the fire wall behind the engine.

Rockdiver

My 82 tag is center back on the firewall

Thanks everyone for the replys , I thought I had 3.90 gears .
When I pull the 3rd ill look for the red ,
There's a link to a bunch of info in the second pOst !!
I have a few extra 4.10 Laying around ! So I will switch it out.
Thanks

To find out what gears are in your truck you can jack up the axle and count the revolutions of the pinion flange to one tire rotation but make sure both tires turn the same speed.
Make a mark with chalk at the 12oclock position on the tire and pinion flange then rotate the tire exactly one revolution while counting the turns of the pinion flange. If it goes 4 turns then to about the 1oclock position then you have 4.10s and if it goes 4 turns then to about 10oclock then you have 4.8s.
I always check this way because in these trucks it's quite common to see altered gear ratios.
