Catalytic converter sensor
« on: Apr 28, 2012, 10:12:38 AM »
I have a 1982 toyota pickup with a sensor that bolts into the catalytic converter.  I read somewhere that this didn't have a direct affect on the smog system but was a temp switch to tell if the cat was overheating.  Can anyone confirm this?  I'm putting a new egzaust on the truck and was curious if I still needed the sensor.

You don't really need it.

My sister's old toyota corona (76) had one of those.

I just jammed it between the cat and cat heat shield when I had to replace the converter. (with a hose clamp so it wouldn't rattle or come out)

Its a Thermo Sensor

If the Catalyst is overheated (above 785 deg C or 1445 deg F) ,  the thermo sensor in the catalyst turns off the AI system OFF.
AI  refers to Air Injection With feedback system (Calif models)

All per Factory Service Manual

Isn't the air injection system all mechanical?  How would it turn it off?  So is the sensor just a protection system to protect the cat?  Sounds like something that I don't really need.

the AI system can switch the air flow from the air pump to either the exaust ports or the air cleaner in response to the O2 concentration in the exhaust manifold. This maintains the air fuel mix ratioof the inlet gas and looks to be controlled by a the thermo switch (TWC), Thermo sensor 1(coolant)  , thermo sensor 2(coolant)connected to the emissions computer.   The themo sensor on the cat is a safety . So I would do like emsevil and hose clamp it on the pipe if you can.
I just recently purchased a New Magnaflow hi flow cat from 4wheel parts. It it direct fit with flanges and has the place for this sensor. And its Cali legal around 200$
