Catalytic converter?
« on: May 25, 2011, 09:23:36 PM »
So it's time to smog my 91 with the 3.0. Problem is the truck came with the muffler and cat cut off. I already have a magnaflow muffler, so I just need a cat. Where should I get a cat from? I looked in the pick n pull and they were all stripped already. I am in CA unfortunately, and I have read that some of the universal catalytic converters will not work for CA :dunno:

It is illegal to sell a used cat in California, that is why there are none on the cars in wrecking yard, the recycle them for cash.

Your only option for new one in CA is to buy a CARB approved cat, they cost about double what they used to, I paid $153 for a new one at Riebes in January.  You could always run over to Sparks and buy one at Summit Racing, then swing by the Cabela's store in Reno and buy anything else that the CA gov. has deemed unfit for sale(but still legal to own) for its citizens.:shake_head:

When I took my truck to get smogged last year I needed a new one so I just picked up a california approved one from Orielly Auto Parts (kragens), its a magnaflow and it passed again this year sense last year was a transfer smog they made me smog again...damn California. I was able to choose between a universal one you weld on or a direct fit that you bolted on. or like said above just pick one up online somewhere.

As of July 2008 it is illegal to buy or sell used catalytic converters.
You can buy an aftermarket catalytic converter as long as it is California ARB approved and used in the stock location.
It can be weld in or direct-fit as long as it was designed for that vehical.
It must have EO# on the shell of the converter.
Keep the receipt because ARB makes the manufacturer warranty them for 4 years.
