You will need to take off the arms.  just take the 4 nuts and 4 cones off the top of each arm.  To take the brakes off you will need to take the caliper off by 2 17mm bolts on the caliper.  Take the 6 10mm bolts off the hub, take the hub off.  then snap ring.  then the 6 12mm nuts, washers and cones.  then there are 2 53mm nuts with a lock washer inbetween them.  You will have to flip the flaps up so the washer isn't locking the nuts together.  Then you can take the 2 nuts, bearing and rotor off the spindle.  did i get it all?  Anything else?

The job will require the following:
1.  10mm wrench or ratchet and socket.
2.  12mm wrench or socket
3.  14mm  ::
4.  17mm  ::
5.  19mm  ::
6.  54mm socket or a hammer and chisel will work in a pinch.
7.  Brass drift
8.  flat tipped screwdriver 1/4" blade

Take the 6 bolts that retain the hub cap& dial off using a 10mm.  Next take the 6 nuts off that retain the hub body using a 12mm.  To remove the cone washers put the brass drift next to the studs and hit the drift with a hammer a few times.  The cone washers will pop off.  Once the hub is totally off bend the tabs back that keep the wheel bearing adjuster nuts in place and using either the 54mm socket or a hammer and chisel loosen the nuts and remove them.  Next using the 17mm remove the 2 bolts that retain the brake caliper.  Now you can remove the rotor and hub assembley.  There are 8 bolts that retain the spindle they are removed using a 14mm.  Now that the spindle is off you can use the 10mm once again to remove the 8 bolts that retain the felt and seal for the backside of the knuckle.  Next using the 17mm remove the 8 nuts that hold the steering arm and lower trunion bearing in place.  The steering arms have cone washers too so you'll have to use the brass drift once again. :moon:

Also, instead of snap ring plyers use Lock Ring.
You can get the special tools from Marlin here: http://www.marlincrawler.com/axleparts.html

Yes but they are worth every penny!  And I just realized I forgot that step. :smack:  For the socket Marlin carries that as well.

go down to your toyota dealer and buy a chiltons manual...After  :beer: and a box full of parts the manual will keep you're head straight. :hammerhead:

Front vented disc....1980 FJ 60 front rotors worked for me.. :yesnod:

Inspect the small bearing races under the steering arms..I found my Left upper pitted and galled..Replace the set...!

A brass drift is a piece of brass stock usually 1/2" diameter and about 6-8" long.  I use brass ones because they will not leave marks of steel surfaces.  The axle rebuild will only run a total of $257.  Thats uncluding all the specialty tools From Marlins and all thebearings and seals.  Hell that even includes new nuts and washers for the wheel bearings.  Not too bad really.  Ive already spent the $$ with Marlin for all the parts you'll need, he has the best quality and prices.  Just do it right the first time, you'll thank me. ;)

If I were you, I'd honestly find someone in your area to help you with this project. I know how to do a solid axle swap too, but that doesn't mean I'm going to trust my welding skill, my ability to make the proper measurements, etc. If you are asking the kinds of questions that you are, then you need to get some help with this.

i have someone helping me out withthe welding and stuff, i just wanted to doublde check what needed to come off the axle, which i belive to be in the first picture all the way tot he right on the top. and i have decided to rebuild the knuckles, and i bought some snap ring pliers at sears for way less than marlins, ill just have to buy the socket from them.

Do yourself a huge favor and go to a very good welding shop to buy 4-5 GOOD quality grinding wheels and 5-10 VERY good skinny wheels.  If you try and go cheap on the tools for taking all the ifs garbage off you'll hate life.  1st quality is the only way to go when you'll be using the grinder that much.
