22re valve noise.

i need some help. iv got a 90 22re in my truck now. when i first start it up it sounds fine at high idle but when high idle kicks down to regular idle i get a nasty clacking noise coming from the head. what could this be? where should i start?
80 shortbed-22re,w56,Marlin 23 spline dual cases,HighAngle drivelines,RUF/63"chevy's,35''mtr's,30 spline Longfields, Allpro highsteer.87 rear axle,5.29 gears,rear spool,BudBuilt cm, marlin HD clutch,ramsey 8000 winch.

mine was doing that but not that bad I pulled the valve cover checked the timing chain guides lucky for me they were good adjusted the valves and it helped a bunch

check your valves the book says .008 and .012 I have found better performance and a more responsive motor at .007 and .011
ASE certified tech. Cummins factory trained tech.

Put a long handle screw driver to the valve cover and the handle to your ear, then do that on the injector, see what one is louder
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

i can hear the tick of the injectors firing. the noise im concerned about is louder than that. ill double check the valve adjustment next weekend but ill be suprised if thats it. hope so though

Try what I said, it really helps to pinpoint noises

my dads had a louder than normal tick. turned out to be a broken valve guide. had to get a new head

ive got an 89 rebuilt the head adj/checked the valves 3 times still has the noise its not too bad though and its coming from the front of the cover.  .07 and .11 when cold and .08 and .12 when hot(opp temp)id say to do it when hot.

Make sure the timing chain guides are still there...........  (stock type are plastic POS)

Pull the valve cover, check your clearances and shine down the timing cover to make sure the chain isn't eating its way to water.
