Are These Axles Any Good?
« on: Feb 21, 2005, 08:25:06 AM »
I found these axles in an older fellows back yard, he says they are a very good set of axles... but I'm not positive.

They are in a 3/4 ton Dodge Power Wagon.

This is the rear...

This is the front...

An this is the knuckle...

Those are the spare axles, but they are the same as the ones under the truck. It also has a divorced transfercase.

He wanted $500 Canadian I think for the whole thing.

Let me know what you guys think of this?

rear axle looks ok, D60, front looks to be a D44 closed knuckle, avoid it. The divorced T-case, you'd have to do some research on it to find out what it is, etc.

reason why I say to avoid the closed-knuckle D44 is that they usually have notoriously small u-joints, and a lot are equipped with drum brakes on the front.

Thats an NP 435  transmisson, $500 for that lot of rusty crap? those old 44's w/ closed knuckles had drum brakes and that one isnt even complete. If the rear 60 is complete offer no more than $50 because your going to spend a lot more to rebuild it, brakes, wheel bearings etc.

it looks like a grass fire has burned the old grease off so the rust could take over
,  pretty neat to have just for nostalgia  but you wont be able to get a nut on that front spindle with all that rust   the rear appears ok otrher than the bolts being rusted off,   dude i wouldnt give more than $100 for the hole shebang

The axles in the pictures are only the spares, the good ones are still inder the truck with oil in them and they are still useable... but I won't bother anyways.

Thanks for all the replys :burnout:

They are the same axles under the truck, except that the ones under the truck have all the bearings, brakes and stuff on them... I just wanted to know really if the front axles was a D44 because I really don't want a D44 under my buggy. :nope:

i wouldn't waste my time with that 44.  closed knuckle junk...although older fords had a kingpin 44 with open knuckles.  i wonder how that compared in strength to a balljoint 44, cuz balljoints suck.

that tranny could be a NP435 or one of the many variants dodge used like the NP4500(NOT to be confused with the NV4500) which was a close ratio cousin of the 435 without the granny 1st gear

if he s selling the axles in the pic and the axles under the truck along with the np435 and divorced tcase you better jump on it, thats a kingpin d44 from a 3/4 ton dodge/ford  they were all nabco conversions back, way back in the old days,  i would run the closed knuckels but convert to disc brakes

Would the D44 be any good with 38.5" Mickey's?

the np435 has a 6.7:1 1st gear

Wow  :shocking:  6.7:1 is extremeley low.

I'll have to get in touch with the guy again and make sure it is the np435.

Yeah, if you went chromos and ctm's but then that would be $$$. I've been looking into the same thing since my brother wants to swap a SA under his Taco. I'd rather go with the FROR housing + longs and chromos before a 44.

Thanks... I'm still gonna check on that NP435 though... See if it actually is one, but I'm pretty sure it is.
