Divide the number of teeth thats on the ring gear by the teeth on the pinion.   here is an example, if you have 41 teeth on the ring gear and 10 on the pinion, you have a 4.10 gear set. hope that helps

that helped alot thanks
your 82 should have a axle gear code of G292 which is 4.10's.

with 33's you need at least 4.88's  but honestly  if I had it to do again I'd run 5.29's and 33's

with 5.29's and 33's you could actually use 5th gear

if you havent taken the gears out take off the drive line and check the paint on the pinion bolt

or jack up you rear end, mark you tire and mark you driveshaft. see how many times the driveshaft spins to get one revolution of the tire.

Do this with a spool or welded diff.  :yesnod:

BUT if you have an open diff or locker do this with one tire on the ground but this time you have to do 2 revolutions of the tire and then count the number of times the driveline spins as indicated below.

4 turns + less than a 1/4 turn should= 4.10

4 turns + about 1/2 turn should = 4.56

4 turns + a little more than 3/4 turn should = 4.88

5 turns + about a 1/3 turn should = 5.29

You get the picture.
