Just bought this truck, the more I dig into it the more I am regretting my choice...

Anyway sometimes when putting the truck in gear and letting out the clutch there is a "bang" I thought it was something to do with the clutch but today I decided to make sure it was not a ujoint and I found that with the truck sitting in neutral I can turn the driveline about an inch.

Is this normal?

Hold on for video, its uploading to youtube

Not a mechanic but I would say your rear diff is toast. Pinion?

Me either so I am rooting for it being a simple fix, but I agree it probably is toast. What really bothers me is it did it when I test drove the truck so it is my own stupid fault for assuming clutch problem and not figuring out what it really was.

Is it geared? Or stock? What are the specs on it? I've had carrier bearings in 2 piece drive lines bang a little when bad.

Seller said 5.29s and full detroit. 1 piece driveline U joints are fine.

Im taking it apart tomorrow.

4RunnerChevy

Hopefully the gears are salvageable, good luck take pics.  I love damage pics

pull the rear diff out and see if the gears are still in good condition. if so you might be able to reset them back to the correct backlash. i wouldnt keep driving the truck.  might just need to tighten up the pinon nut if it got loose but not sure if thats a good repair.

johnny_boy02

Yeah I am super excited (and by excited I mean pissed) about the whole deal......... I will get some pics or video up so others can point and laugh.

It is not my main mode of transport, so that is good. It is for fun and for my girlfriend to get to work in the snow. Luckily the forecast is just showing rain.

Joey88RUNR

My rear 5.29  detroit does the same thing, no bang though..Im not worried about it though.

Yeah but, we also like to figure out what happened to get you back up and running.

Like what everyone has said and you said you are going to do, take it apart and take a look. Could be bad, could be good, at least you'll know for sure.

Slolyfe

My 5.29's and a Detroit EZ Locker did the same for years. With a ton of wheeling. But check it out. Its all easy to pull apart.
You'll never take me alive

johnny_boy02

At least its not the middle of summer and 104 degrees outside. And I dont have to work in gravel........

And its a good excuse to buy a brake bleeder and floor jack....

Since I am already going to be dirty I can change the slave cylinder at the same time..

And Im going to have to organize at least half the garage to make room..

Think positive.... Think positive....

I had an ez-locker, once apon a time, I sheared the crosspin, oh my what a bang.

johnny_boy02

I dont see anything obvious other than pitting. It feels good out of the truck, no play.

IronClad

its probably just that detroit.  they clang and bang and make all sorts of noise

Word hard, Keep your head in the game and if anyone gets in your way tell them you don't give a damn !

johnny_boy02

I have had detroits bang around before but never like this one, never had this much d-line play either.

Since I went through the trouble of taking it out I made the trek up to Inchworm to let them look at it. They said it looked fine.

Since the girlfriend will be driving this to work in the snow I am pondering a selectable locker. I have been trying to call Marlin all day to see if they have a lead time on 3rds but I can't get through.

Very frustrating.

4RunnerChevy

Run it, I was thinking it was gonna be gloomy   :inthedark:

johnny_boy02

Luckily no gloom. But I have a interesting issue with the front end. The drivers side hub/axle snap ring has no grove to remove it?

Anyone see this before? Im stumped.

4RunnerChevy

Thats normal,  the c-clip does not have traditional eyes like a snap ring.  You can try to use external snap ring pliers, two screw drivers, or flat nose snap ring pliers (best).  Just dont lose it !

Rocksurfer

It a Detroit, they have some play and they will bang especially if it is not a soft locker. My brothers would disengage with a scary bang. The play seems a little excessive though may be how it was set up. If you don't know what you are doing have someone that does check the backlash.

There is no grove to get pliers, screw drivers, etc into, the "snap ring" is completely solid.

The passenger side is normal.

could be me, but it looks like it is missing all together?

Good call, the glare is killing me.  Looked like the flats are at 10:30 and 11:30.

4RunnerChevy

I still can't tell, but you should be able see the groove at the end of the axle, about 1/8" from the end.  If you remove the nuts and cone washers, and the c-clip was indeed missing, the lockout body should slide right off.
