Hello I'm new to the forum I have a 98 Taco and I've been saving to do a SAS. I have a couple questions and just wanted peoples opinions. I have been talking to the guys at All Pro and at Low Range about their full aftermarket kits and the prices are just out of control. A local guy has a set of Land-cruiser axles from a FJ80 I believe, and another has a set of 85 Pickup axles I also found a Wagoneer in the local bone yard. I would like to stay with the Toy parts  if plausible.  Please give me your opinions on which axles would be best to start with. Also how can I change the transfer case output to passenger side for the Toyota axles? All help is a big plus

Thanks,

Dave

I have been talking to the guys over at Low Range nice people I talked him down a bit for the full kit but it seems I can build it waaaay cheaper. I really want the Land-Cruiser axles i'm just wondering if they will fit?

FloridaCrawler

Come on guys 1 reply I'm asking for your help

bigarms23

well usin g a fj8- front axle is doable but than you would have to change your driverside output and swap in a passenger side tcase that is gear driven. i looked at the low range aka trail gear kit its not bad kit but i personally don't like their springs but you could  run a 3inch spring and 37s but if you don't want to run the fj axle than start looking for a ford dana 60 with a driverside drop

I'm think fj  axles with marlin trans adapter with a gear driven t case that way I have the passenger output. Sound right?

Zs Confederate Toy

I would run a Dana 44 out of an Early Bronco (driver side drop), they should be the same width as a Toy rear. Its the same width as my 87 and if Im not mistaken they still ran the same rear end

Thanks for help guys all opinions welcome

FJ80 axles - Not sure on the exact width but would be better than the pre 85 axle.  But due to the few trucks running this there isn't much aftermarket support for it.
85 Toy axles - TOO narrow
All Proof (Dana 60 Hybrid) - way pricey.  Probably too pricey for me.  But I would buy it if I had the money.
Low Range(Trail Gear) - not a bad option.  I don't know how much all the internals would cost.
Dana 44 - Really common and lots of knowledge and aftermarket parts available.

I want to do a passenger side output so I can put a less expensive chain tcase in my truck but rerouting exhaust, etc is probably not worth the money saved.  So probably best to get a driver output and if you lower your t case gears get a kit that is suiting.

Yea I've been trying  to find parts for the fj axles and they are hard to find. I'm stuck between the land cruiser and the dana 44

FloridaCrawler

so I talked to the guy with fj axles they are out of a 77 fj40 has both  axles and twin stick 4 speed out of the same cruiser. said everything for 700what ya'll think?

TacoRunner

FJ40 axles are to narrow. You want something at least 64" wide. FJ40 is narrower than the toy mini with is only 56"

I would either go big.... or keep it simple.  Go big, a dana 60 40+in tires.. Or simple, find a dana 44 out of a waggy and run 35s.

X2 I would go with a driver drop dana 44, inexpensive if you look around. That's what I most commonly see guys do. Maybe with the intent to go 60's later after some abuse.

FloridaCrawler

Bone yard wants 150 for a dana 44 put of a waggoneer but I've heard they are weak axles I wanna run 37x14x16

FloridaCrawler

What trucks came with a 6 lug dana 60?

FloridaCrawler

So I'll have to get both and do a full swap?

bigarms23

get a driverside ford dana 60 and a rear ford 60
