Tie rod end or Heim Joint?
« on: Sep 23, 2011, 02:36:04 PM »
I'm surrently running TRE's on my histeer setup.  my TRE's have lasted a few years without issues, but now I have a couple that are bad.  Just wondering if there is any advantage to swapping them for Heims or if I should just leave it alone and replace my bad joints.

ive broken tres myself, and not really doing anything I thought was crazy. But I have assist. Daves has tres with a 5 year warranty. I myself, and if ya want a upgrade over them, go with heims. Rarely do they fail if you get quality ones from what ive seen.

Heims tend to be more subseptable to wet condistions and wear faster. For this reason I like TRE's. But I dont like the Toyota ones, go with the Chevies.

i've got what ever tie rod ends come with the marlin highsteer kit.  i think they are fj80 tre's?  i run ram assist with 40's.  do the chevy tre's bolt right in, or do i need to cut and weld a new threaded sleeve for it?

I believe you gotta get a reamer, and ream your arms for the pitch of them. And get a tap and drill and tap your tie rod and drag link for the threads. Same would go for heims, minus the reaming.

Ya you would have to ream your arms for the them or just drill them for hiems. I would think you would just get a piece of tube and weld threaded bungs in rather than drill and tap your current draglink and tie rod, or at least thats how I would do it.

I love running heims over TRE's.  Way easier to remove the heims from the steering arms when working on the frontend.  You can also run missalignment spacers under them to gain some clearance between the tie rod & the leaf spring.  I'm running heims on the tie rod and using the FJ80 TRE on the drag link.  I might redo the drag link sometime to change them out to heims.  I still plan on running a TRE on the pitman arm side of the drag link.  My brother ran a hiem on the pitman arm side and he had some steering issues.
