Getting to Tahoe side of trail from Fresno

We are thinking about going in Tahoe side on Thursday. My question is. Should we go HWY 50 , or up and around on HWY 80? Google maps says to take HWY 80. Just figured I would ask here from someone that would actually know.

I like the 80. Pop off on the 89 and head towards Tahoe.
