6.0 With a Cold. Diesel TECHS help!!!!!
« on: Aug 30, 2011, 06:57:07 PM »
03 6.0 f-250 That runs fine when its warmed up.
Bone Stock as far as motor goes.
If its cold at rpm near 2500 it starts to hessitate and you have to let off the gas so it will shift.  When you let off the gas she will poof a wee bit of white smoke.

Sometimes throws a restricted EGR code.  But goes away by itself.  This was prior to this whole mess.

I was going to do fuel filters on it just to get that out of the way because they havent been changed in a long long time.

Need some possible problems and a good explanation please.

Thanks!

I'm having the same problem. A mech buddy said that it's related to carbon build up. The mentioned a product called BGZ 109 should help this. If it don't it's a expensive fix! Talking about taking apart the upper half a letting parts soak. Hope the BGZ 109 stuff works! Can't afford the fix it bill that will come w/ this. I'll keep ya posted on what happens w/ the BGZ 109. Once I get this stuff cleaned up I'm planing to do the EGR delete.

That's been my problem too. I have another buddy that's a mech shop manager. He said he carries it at his shop. I'm going to try to get a bottle out of him tomorrow.bim not sure what all is involved w/ doing this. If it's more then just adding to the motor and running it I will probably just have his shop take care Of it for me. I'll keep ya posted.

pm awhotrods.  he is a guru when it comes to the ford 6.0 td.  I know they are notorious for having egr problems.  be careful it doesn't start leaking coolant into the motor.  We had a buddy hydro lock his motor when the egr went out on his 6.0 ford td.  my advice would be contact awhotrods considereing he has had his since it was new and has pretty worked out all the bugs over the last 7 or so years.

I have a buddy thats going thru this with his 6.0.  His truck is still under warranty so he managed to get it fixed at ford. Turned out to be the whole egr system was messed up and had to be replaced.  It is a well known issue with these engines.  I would take it to ford and let them tell you exactly what it is.

Yeah. The 109 stuff is just an engine flush. Not going to try this. Going to take mine to a shop and see what they say.

I work on A LOT of the 6.0's and 4.5's which are the V6 knock off in the LCF's.... I've had to replace 3 intakes to date due to the massive amount of carbon build up in the intake manifold and EGR valve... Couldnt clean it well enough! If you are having to add any coolant you better think about replacing the EGR cooler along with the oil cooler as the EGR cooler is supplied with coolant from the oil cooler. Usually the oil cooler will become restricted and then starve the EGR cooler causing it to crack internally...  I've had to do ALOT of oil coolers and EGR coolers in these things as well. Best way to test if the EGR cooler is leaking is to pressure up the coolant tank, jack the rear of the truck up and remove the EGR valve and take a peak inside. You'll know if its leaking.

I see a lot of O-ring issues with the standpipes and injectors as well.... they have upgraded high pressure standpipes with teflon backing rings now too.... I wouldnt ever own a 6.0 but they sure do make me a lot of $$$$ :yesnod:

yeah they need to have the oil changed frequently, use OEM filters ONLY and they tend to run a lot longer and smoother if you open them up and get the carbon burned out of them.... I have to pull an engine out this week that I installed a year and a half ago.... 40,000 on a factory reman (oil pan to turbo) and it spun a rod bearing... I just put a tranny, tranny cooler, tcase, front driveline, alternator, belt, rear pads, rotors, left rear wheel bearing and turbo to charge air pipe hose on another one over the past two days.... Paid 25.3 hours :beerchug:

i unbolt the 6 cab bolts and jack it about 8 inches off the frame so I dont have to take the brake lines off :yesnod: makes life easier but its still a pain in the ass.. its a warranty swap too so it only pays 12 hours..... took 10 to pull it and strip the parts off of it... damn thing broke a rod bolt and spun the bearing with only 40,000 miles ..... I haven't really worked on them because I'm on training and I don't do tear downs or anything that intense. But I see them come in with problems and help the mechanic fix it. I've seen enough to make me know that's a bad mo mo

Once you get the EGR issues fixed the engine will run for a long time without issue.  Its not a engine mechanical issue.  They are good engines and will do 300k no problem.

I've yet to see a 6.0 with 300k on the original engine.... Most all the ones I work on though are fleet rigs running PTO's and have A LOT of idle time which is what kills them!
