Gearing suggestions

Wondering what you guys think for gearing choices? I just bought an 86 runner that I'm building for mostly daily driving but will hit the hills and be more than capable. I would like to run 35" on the street and 37" for the trails but realistically probably stick with 35". But I don't want to have to regear if I end up going 37" I was thinking 4.88 but I noticed most using 5.29 is it because they want that gearing in helping crawl or the truck won't move with anything else but 5.29.     Thanks for any info. Oh yeah I will be doing SAS and dual case set up

Yeah if you are running 33's or 35's 4.88's are best 33's will be a little low and 35's just right. If you don't mind being a little low with 35's then go with 5.29's and if you ever plan on stepping up to 37's then the 5.29's are best.

thanks guys im just thinking strength and the lower the weeker thats all  much appreciated

488s will work well until you reach 37s than its best to switch to 529s

i daily drove my truck on 35s with 410s and 529s and 529s way better!

5.29s only have a bad name from improper set up or break in...

I run 529s and 35s with a 5spd 3.0l
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

General rule of thumb for maintaining a near stock performance of 4.10's and 28's w/a 5-spd is 4.46's for 31's, 4.88's for 33's and 5.29's for 35's and up, with the auto trans using one gear set taller(up to 5.29's).  A lot of people with the heavier Runners actually find the 5.29's and 33's to be a fairly good match.  While it is a little high, it isn't high enough to be an issue.  If you are buying new gears and are planning on running 37's on the trail and 35's on the street, I would opt for the 5.29's.  This will put you as close to the stock set-up as possible, take full advantage of any engine performance upgrades, and only leave you a little under powered w/the 37's(similar to running 31's and 4.10's).

These Drivetrain Calculators along with Marlin's Trans Gear Chart, will give you an idea of the effects that different tire and gear combos will have on your truck.
'90 black X-cab mod'd 3.0, 33's/4.88's, rear ARB, custom bumpers, sliders, safari rack, etc.

I have 4:88s with 33s on my 83. it a litttle under stock. (motor spins faster 55 than stock) you would most liky run a bit slower than stock with 35s. diff. if you want bigger than 35 would have to have more than 4:88s.  :psss: :driving: :blah: :nerv: :willynilly:

MY ONLY REGRET IS THAT I HAVE NOTHING USEFUL TO OFFER THIS FORUM  :moon:

Glad you started this toppic i am in the same boat.  I am going to do the e-locker with 35s.  I was going to go with 4:88 but not after reading this thread.
