I'm 3/4 of the way done with a 3.4 swap with an auto transmission. The reason I'm posting this here is because I believe it is more newbie than 3.4 swap. 1995 4runner 5vze and a340f transmission with dual transfer cases.

Can anyone tell me how to seat the torque converter? When I first put it on, it was loose and wobbly and I could spin it with my hand. Not knowing any better, I put it in and ended up breaking the pump gear. I bought a new pump gear and pump and installed them. I put the torque converter in and again it was loose. I read somewhere that some people put the torque converter on the ground then put the transmission on top of it and let the transmission fall into place on the torque converter. Not being able to do that because the transfer cases were attached, I used a BFH (3lb sledge) to drive it on. Maybe not the best idea, but it was the only way I could get the distance from the bellhousing edge to the torque converter back to factory specs. This time, the torque converter was on tight. I couldn't spin it or move it.

I put the transmission back in and hoped for the best. Again, I got nothing. The dang transmission is not pumping at all. I can't figure this out for the life of me. I know I'm gonna have to pull the transmission again (YEAH!!!) but I wanna get this thing moving. Somebody please help me!!! Thanks

No. I made sure it was full when I put it on. Almost had it overflowing out the top.

Thanks for the heads up. I have run it through all the gears. It is not pumping it. I checked my tranny cooler hoses and they are bone dry. My trans fluid is coming out of the dipstick tube, so I think I'm full.

yotaneck13

might have something to do with the fact you had to BFH the tc on the imput shaft? it should just slip on there.  It will have a little play that will be taken up once the flex plate is bolted to it if your that over full it may have overloaded your pump and taken it out again... id drail the tranny and fill it up again fill your cooler first and put some in the lines and leave them semi loose till fluid comes out them  hope you get er figured out

NEVER worked on a toy trans. just gm, ford, mopar.

butt I'd NEVER try to put the t/c in with a bfh. only by hand.

Is the center "gear" on the torque converter supposed to move back and forth when you shake the torque convrtor back and forth. I know it is supposed to spin in circles, but side to side threw me for a loop.  Btw, it loooks like the sledgehammer was not the best option.

Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

yotaneck13

not even brass for a t/c if you haave to use any either your splines are not lined up or somethis else isnt straight.  minimal play is normal its a moving part itg gonna have some. I mean you sounldnt be able to move it more than a 1/8 inch even a 1/16th

I'd never use a hammer on a trans. for anything.

sounds like your pump isn't splined. also hope you didn't mess up your input shaft or tc by beating the tc on. i usually slide to converter on and then kinda bounce it in a circle till it drops in. i think it drops in 2 or 3 times before it is seated down the last time it drops would be for your trans oil pump.

R.DesJardin

You should have set the trans on end, t-cases down and easliy dropped the converter onto the splines. keeping track of the pump ears you must drop the converter into. Measure to be sure it's in. No Hammmers needed, ever.

Should I be able to spin the torque converter once it is locked in correctly?  I took my time this time and now it is locked in place. It still has a bit of play but will not spin by hand.

yota T-75

yes it should spin. the pump may be locked up or the torque converer is locked up

does the pump turn?  im not sure how you check the tc but if its bad then you have to get a new one. maybe stick a srew driver and try to turn the inside of the tc

I have a few old pumps sitting around. I will try those.  I did put the new one in the TC before I reinstalled everything and once in place it all turned as one piece.

Should I be able turn the transmission input shaft by hand?

dude, I don't mean to "knock" anyone at any time for trying to fix there stuff, butt a autotrans is NOT the thing to lean DIY on.
a motor is easyer. I think you should find a bud that;s done a few and buy him some  givin the ?s your asking
at the point your at I'll bet theres more truble in the trans too. cut your losses and get some help.
or it will only keep getting more $$$.  just my  :twocents:
