Mayday Mayday Need Help ASAP
« on: Jul 08, 2011, 05:38:28 PM »
Alright, 84 toyota st cab sr5. Put the key in and turn it like your going to crank and when you get to the first notch like your accesory all your dash lights should come on and then you crank it the rest of the way and then they go off. Well mine do not come on. but my a/c will blow if you turn it on and the fuel pump will come on. By the way its a 22r with a 20r head, thats where the electric fuel pump comes into place. COULD this be the ignition switch? What could it be. Ohh and I have to get to work by noon tomorrow HAHA this sucks. Checked all the fuzes and all is good.

My buddies 86 just did that last week, and it was the ignition switch.  There is a little arm on the inside that pushes the pins, and if one of the pins don't make contact, no ignition.  My buddy at first thought it was the starter, but after I checked it out, it was the switch. If you need to know where to get one, I can call him and find out, he paid like $40 or $60 for it with 2 keys.  It takes about 15 minutes to swap.  PM me if interested.

We replaced both parts, the harness side where it plugs into, as well as the key side on the outer column part.  It came complete.  The starter relay would be cheaper, so I would go with that first if you already tested it.  I would test the wiring on the ignition to see if you are getting power going through it, also check to see if your relay is working too.  I have seen it once on another friend of mine's truck, where the relay had power going to it, but was not clicking over and sending the power out.  I would test them both before you spend money just replacing random parts, but they are pretty easy to test.

Not too sure the pull start thing will work if it's the ignition switch.  You say the idiot lights don't even come on so odds are you won't have power to the coil either.

Are you pulling back on the key a bit as you are starting it?  If you are, that is what my buddies truck was doing.  When I pulled the old switch out, we looked at his old switch and saw the connection was bad, but when we pulled it, it made contact.  We still installed the new one obviously, and has been fine since.
