Speedometer Gear Ratio
« on: Jun 30, 2011, 10:26:09 AM »
Hi All,

I searched for this but didn't find a definite answer. I have an '89 4Runner with 4.7s in the rear case. I need to replace the speedometer driven gear and would like to slow down my speedometer (it reads too fast) as much as I can. Currently, I have a 6x19 driven plastic gear in the t-case. If I want to slow down the speedometer, should I order a 6x18 or a 6x20 speedometer gear? Does a larger number speed up or slow down the cable? I've heard both ways on other sites (Pirate) but usually get the most sensible tech here.

Thanks!

No one knows? Simpler may be better: If I want to slow down my speedometer, do I need a plastic gear with more or less teeth?

i didnt think you could get different speedo gears in these? more teeth on the larger gear will slow it down, for example 6&20=3.33, 6&19=3.161, 6&18=3.0   the lower the number the higher the gear ratio thus turning faster. :beerchug:

Thanks! Yeah, there are three variations, and from what I've heard you just have to make sure that the teeth have the same cut and that it's 2wd or 4wd. I don't know how much change I'll actually have, but I'm going to give it a try.
