Does anyone know of a good rear disc brake kit for an '82 toyota 4x4?  I would like one that uses toyota rotors and calipers.

ezthere

Nope but here is a shot of an 85 with vented disc front and rear...1980 FJ-60 front disc. Late model toytoa calipers, 1988 Chevy Suberban 1 ton front rotors in the rear. Brackets by Jay Kopa. Calipers 1979 Caddy Eldorado. Late model toyota 7/8 master brake cylinder..

Look here. http://www.bigrocksoffroad.com/

They use 79-85 solid rotors and calipers. Told me in an e-mail no other rotors or calipers work with their kit. Sez, not necessary to modify anything else in the system.

There kit is well substandard..No disrespect, you can do the same kit and have the vented rotors F&R for less then the total rear kit.

U can see in the pics...Vented looks cool and is much better..The only thing you need to buy is the rotors everything else can be had...Junk yard's , home brew brackets. If you have the $$ then visit 4x4 off road. Get the vented kit....

"WT built caliper mounts", sweet, are those a one run production unit? Just kidding. Let's see it when it's done. WT, your fabrication skills are legendary.

Legendary fab skills eh?  Im not so sure thats such a good thing......

I dont plan on having to be worried about the mounts breaking, I already have 1/2" plate to build them out of.  I also plan on gusseting them heavily so I wont have them rip off the axle tube.  I figure it should work out pretty nicely, Im just waiting till I can afford the proportioning valve from summit ($40) yes Im THAT broke right now. :smack:  But Ill order it next week so it looks like weekend after next it'll be done.

WT,  you're gonna start a thread on this when you get done right?  I might end up with ifs rotors sittin around soon and would be stoked to have 4whl discs, plus a guy at work bought a willwood proportioning valve for his race car but isn't gonna use it, so it's mine if I want it.      Nate

yea Ill do a tech thread for the swap.  The one thing Im still wondering on is the residual valve int eh master cyl.  It seems Ive seen them pull out of the master cyl by threading a screw into them.

I've been pondering a rear disc swap myself, I also need an E-brake and dont want to use a t-crase brake. Dont the Caddy calipers have a parking brake ? The Big rocks kit looks hokey, looks like they mount the rotor behind the axle ??? to make up for their brackets not being offset. Wouldnt that change the seal location on the axle and spline engagement int the 3rd? No thanks

WHITE_TRASH

Hokey or not thats the way Im building my setup.  Nothing changes about the axle shaft itself at all in the swap.  All it changes is the brakes.

So you're putting the rotor behind the axle just like Big Rocks? Does this eleminate machining the rotor like has to be done if it's mounted in front of the axle?

Cool.

I've wondered why a non fabricator type couldn't use FJ40 vented rotors on the Big Rocks kit and any year IFS calipers? I know the v6 ones are a little big and might need grinding for wheel clearance. But their pics reflect a 86-88 4 cylinder IFS caliper versus the earlier 79-85 caliper. WTFO?

WHITE_TRASH

Exactly.  There is no reason you couldnt use another year other than the bolt pattern that the studs pass through may be off but drilling 6 holes isnt exactly rocket science.

Well there's no difference in the 6 lug bolt pattern on the 79+ Toyota trucks and 4Runners.

I would go with the vented rear disc.I mean your in there anyway, the off set is not that much of a challenge.Plus it looks cool.Less chance of warpage over solid.

Have you warped solids in the front?
I've not, never been an issue.

What's the point of putting too much brake in the rear, and then having to dial it out with a pv?
