Crawler Questions
« on: Nov 05, 2002, 08:12:07 AM »
I am looking for some info, I have a 2001 taco 4x4 4cyl 5 speed, I like the set up for the tcase adapter, now what else do I need? do I need the crawler box? and the adapter? I just need to know what all I am looking at, also I have a 85 that I want to do a hysteer setup on, I like the marlin for durability purposes, what else do I need for that other than the 579 dollar kit -- mike

the only other thing I can think of is an IFS Steering box from a 86-95 (I think 95, could be wrong).  I'm pretty sure that you also need a certain amount of lift to be able to clear the marlinks above the springs.  I think you need at least 3 inches.  a non-newbie may know better...

for the "T" case adapter you need to figure out what you are going to want to do as far as what side you want the front drive shaft to come out.  which the axle you get for the front should dictate that.
and then how much of a crawl ratio you are going to want.  the home page links talk about the good and bad points of the newer chain drive "T" case and the older gear drive "T" case.  it is up to you to firgure out what type of duties you are going to expect from the truck and mainley how much cash and time you are willing to spend.

if you're going to do high steer you will need a steering box from an ifs 4x4 (i think 86 to 95 might want to check on that,) and you will need to be able weld or have access to someone who can weld on the steering box brackets.

yep I am building a 2001 Taco, I am looking at a dana 44 coil-over -- I know I am looking at bucks but it will well worth it, and it is already all enough to go over all the curbs and the baskets at the mall and the grocery store, I am just worried about a diff protector, just so that I do not scratch my brand new chrome diff cover, not to mention my 6 bilsteins that are attached to my rear axle -- mike
