Pinion strength
« on: Jan 23, 2005, 12:30:05 PM »
After looking at Barfots post about the 5.13 Toy gears (used in Norway) being just as strong as 4.88s, it got me thinking.  He says these 5.13s have 8 teeth on the pinion and 41 on the ring gear.  4.88s have 8 and 39.  Prety even strength wise.  Then wouldnt 5.71s (7/40) be just as strong as 5.29s (7/37)

Don't really know, but i've heard of more guys over the years that have broke 71's, than 29's.
Who cares anyway, we have Marlin to give us all the gearing we really need, where it counts.

I know the 5.71 are weakers then the 5.29...5.29 is is as low as I think you can go ans stay relibleand strong..I've seen too many of the 5.71 pinions trun to shards of metal under a slight beating..

Planing on running 36 Irocks or 37 MTRs with 5.29s, but if 5.71s have the same number of teeth on the pinion I might run them.  Im not saying 5.71s are strong.  I just think that its logical to say they are just as weak as 5.29s.

the 5.71 is a smaller pinion,,with a 36 and duel cases and 5.71 the pinion will bust..Its been proven over and over on the rocks..You would be surprised how much smaller they are..

I had 29's in my yellow truck with 37's and 22R, didn't have any trouble gettin up to Inskip. The motor was stock, just real strong. Marlins head and 3 angle valve grind really worked well in that truck.

That makes sense, both pinions have 7 teeth, but the 71s have a smaller diameter.  5.29 it is then.  Thanks for the info.  5.13 would be cool but I dont think you can get them over here.
