I found a 87 Toyota 2WD truck in a pull-and-save and it's got crossover steering on it.  My 85 PU is manual steering and I want to convert it over.  I've got an IFS box, PS pump and all the hoses.  Will that 2WD steering work?  If so, what do I need to pull from it?  How do I connect my current steering arms to the crossover steering linkages?  Sorry for the newbie question  :smack:

IF YOU DONT WANT TO MESS WITH IT I HAVE CROSSOVER STEERING THAT I AM SELLING IF INTRESTED CALL MIKE @916-871-0747
BACK TO THE QUESTION  IN ALL MY DAYS OF GOING TO THE JUNK YARD I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING 2 WHEEL DRIVE THAT HAD CROSSOVER STEERING. BUT IF IT DOES THE TIE ROD AND DRAG LINK WOULD NOT BE TO THE STRENGTH OR CALABER TO WHAT YOU WANT TO PUT ON A ROCK CRAWLER. THIS IS A INTRESTING QUESTION AND TO GET MORE RESPONSE WE NEED TO KNOW MORE DETAIL :welcome:

huh, not push-pull  :wag:   My crossover steering defn. is whatever came on the 86+ stock 4x4's and what I thought 4x2's.  I'm most confused on how the crossover drag links and tie rods connect to my current steering arms?

you cant attach the tierods directly to your current steering arm you need to find another pass. side arm and weld it on top of the other.

you have the ifs box and power steering pump

what does the 2wd parts have to do with crossover steering, this is where you confused me.

The drag link and tie rod.  Will those work?  Thanks for the replies and the heads up on the steering arms.

well you see the 2wd as the same kind of steering systeme that the 4wd ifs use so no it won't work

a ifs steering system is like this:
idler arm________________________pitman arm (atached to the steering box)
                          /                                  \
                         /                                    \
                     to the                              to the
                     knuckel                             knuckel

crossover:
      knuckel -----------------------------------------------ifs box
  (pass. arm)_____________________________driver arm

Best thing to do IMO is to get high-steer kit, but plenty of people run crossover. :beerchug:

Ok, those diagrams helped a ton!   :beerchug:   I understand the difference between stock IFS crossover and what everybody else calls crossover.  I would love to setup hy-steer but I was hoping to get this powersteering thing done cheap for right now while I'm stock and then do the hy-steer, suspension, lockers, and tires all in one shot.

Thanks again 88runner, you've been a big help

Start a thread on what it takes to put powersteering on a truck.  I know there are several that have done it on here, and they would be happy to assist you.  My dad did it, I will try and get him to post what he did

Yea, that's Hy-steer crossover.  I thought there was such a thing as regular crossover.  I also thought that regular crossover came on the IFS trucks and I could just steal the parts from the frontend and convert over to crossover.  88runner cleared it up for me.  I didn't realize that the IFS crossover had that funky idler arm thing.  I guess I'll just save my money and get hy-steer  :turtle:

Uncle Jesse

ifs trucks, as well as the 2wd trucks, use Paralellogram steering.  The shape of the pitman and idler, center link and an imaginary line between sector shaft in steering box and idler arm shaft make a paralellogram shape.  But you can just call it standard steering.

regular crossover has the tie rod below the springs instead of above the springs like high steer.
thats the only difference.
