My call letters are KD7PXV.  Ham radios are so much better than CB's.  We need to get more wheelers into "better quality".

Mostly use 2M business band (race radio) when off road. FAR out performs a CB, but then you hams knew that!

So I just got back from Moab last weekend.  I went wheeling with family who all have ham radio licenses, etc.  Well since I was up all night the day that I left for Moab finishing my EFI/dash swap I forgot my antenna.  I got down to our campground and since all the other guys are engineers and just really smart, they figured that as long as I had the right length of wire I wouldn't burn up my radio.  We wrapped wire around the base of my antenna mount and cut to proper length and it worked awesome and still way better than any CB!!!

I went to do Behind the Rocks with some buddies while the rest of my family was on the other side of Moab doing another trail.  I was very suprised to find that I could still talk to them.  Had to have been at least 10 to 15 miles away.  Typically CB's can't go farther than a couple miles even with an awesome antenna.

I'm not trying to rip on people with CB's, I have one also.  I just wish more people would get into amature radio.

I hit San Ignacio from very near the silt beds during the B1k 3 years ago. That's about 30-35 miles in a volcanic area. Did this with a Kenwood 261A 2meter (max of 50 watts) and a Zero gain mag base antenna on the roof of my Suburban. Had to turn the squelch off, but it worked.

If I am thinking correctly, that is the exact same mobile radio I am running in my Toyota.  Bought it a couple years ago when I got my license.  I also bought an external amplified speaker that I mounted up by my ear that is a must!

Has anyone tried the icom radio with the remote mount face? I thinks its the 208h.

ntsqd

The Icom of choice with the off road racers seems to be the V8000 and it's 75 watts of transmit.

If I got a HAM radio for my truck, would I have to take a test to get a licence?  If so, how hard are the tests?  I saw there were 3 different levels.

You would need to take the test, and the Technician License is all you'd need to get started. May be all you ever need. Test will take some studying. Link above to a practice test.

You would have to pass a test but a lot of the questions are common sense.  My 11 year old brother passed it first try.  There are lots of young kids that have passed.  Well maybe not lots.

I have an icom v8000, and it is nearly indestructible.  Very good radio.

What about your call letters?

Just switch a HAM over to CB, same performance, but on the CB band, and no test required.

:smack:  I don't think you should be posting tales of your ILLegal active on martin's site.. P.S. What you've done is chargeable with a $7,500 fines for the first offence, second offence is $15,000 and third is $30,000.  It's not hard to get two or three charges IE: You have an Mod'ed 10meter radio (1st offence), it's installed(2nd offence), you have transmitted( 3rd offence).  Lets see now. The FCC boys do the math like this.

1st offence      $7,500
2nd offence + $15,000
3rd offence  + $30,000
                    --------------
                     $52,500

If found guilty on all charges you have to pay $52,500 + interest, can no longer drive that truck you make a living with( I think you are a truck driver). If you can not pay the full amount the Fed's will take anything you have house, Car/Truck, savings, tax returns, kid collage funds, tools, inheritence money.

Dude if you can fix a truck, ya can make general class in a year or less. just do it.

YellowJacket

What's up guy! How do you like the difference CB vs HAM?

Ewong

Oh and HAM and CB are totaly different animals.

For one - CB is AM and Ham is well.. almost anything... (it is by definition "experimental")

For most people using it to "communicate" (as opposed to experimenting with transmitting) they'll use common commercial radios.

For most "tech's" thats the 144mhz and 440mhz ranges (I think I got that right).

Basically - you get very long distances and can hear clearly.
Becuase there are alot of HAMs around - some have pooled togehter to build repeaters. THis allows a signal to be "rebroadcast" from a "tower".. so calling around mountian ranges is "no problemo".
yeah yeah - still IFS...
