whats the best way to check your rear diff for fluid in a 1986 4runner?

I just drill a big hole in the top of the dif. (have to remove from truck to do it) then I can shove a stick in it to check oil level!  or you could just pull the plug and on flat leval ground the oil should just spill out. don't have to stick nothing in it.
