I might be wrong, but I would think leaving the oil in it would be safer: if it is empty, the heat you put into the metal would just have to heat up a thin film of oil to get it to start smoking and ignight. If it is full of oil, the oil should act as a heatsink. atleast thats how I think it would work.
There is a fine line between clever and stupid, I just wish I knew when I crossed it.

idk. u could be right, you could be wrong. what i would do it drain the oil into a clean bucket, weld and then use that oil over again if you can.. :twocents:

Weld it with the oil in it. Heat sink and it wont catch on fire. Youre truck wont burn to the ground, if any does "flare up" it will use what little 02 that is in there and go out
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

when i welded my front armor on, my axle was out, empty and clean.... STILL smoked and sizzled like a b*std......  so i would prob leave it full also...
