brake problem need help
« on: Feb 26, 2011, 05:29:14 PM »
ok, i looked around a little bit, but im really busy as we just got another 3 ft of snow and i do snow removal, so i didnt have time to search. keep in mind this is my DD and my only vehicle.

anyways, the problem just started today, felt like my brakes were sticking a little bit. then, after a little bit, i lost all pressure to the pedal, and i had to pump it 5 or 6 times to get any pressure. then the right rear started smoking a ton, the same side my axle seal is blown on. the thing was extremely hot, sprayed cold water on it and it still took about 10 minutes to cool. im gonna go out there and take the drum off and see what i see. any suggestions? could this be at all related to the axle seal?  :help:

axle seal leaks onto the drum and coats the brake shoes with oil, then the oil brakes down the lining.

the pad might have un glued from one and stacked or the bearing froze.  only way to know for sure is to pull the drum

I am putting my money on a bad axle bearing. When an axle seal goes out it floods the bearing with gear oil washing out all the grease in the bearing. Speaking from experence.

bearing is most likely problem...
i had similar symptoms like that before and it was my LSPV however... it was messed up and as i drove done the road it would "pump up" just the rear brakes and make them lock up
Those are some huge welds!

yea, i pulled the drum and the thing is caked with gear oil. im going to the auto parts store tomorrow to get some brake cleaner, clean it up a little bit to see if that helps. if not, i might have to rebuild the brakes. and you mean the bearing as in this-

because i am actually planning on getting marlins rear axle rebuild kit, soon as i can.

yea, mine just smoked a :pokinit: ton. kinda felt like the brakes were being held on when i was driving, but when the tire was in the air, felt fine. the pedal just went straight to the floor unless i pumped it a few times

might be a blown wheel cylinder  :dunno:

for the record I had a rear wheel bearing lock up and slid the tire (35-12.50) it practically welded the ball bearings to the race.  of course is smoked like crazy all the gear oil running over those hot bearings.

yea, im thinking wheel cylinder. i cleaned it all up real good today, and, now the brake goes on and off involuntarily. would this be because of the wheel cylinder?
