My Newest Creation ('86 w/ 8-Lud D44 and 14 Bolt)
« on: Jan 16, 2005, 02:03:34 AM »
well, after much concideration about doing a one link, i decided that i couldnt get a grader ball for cheap enough, so, i went back to the drawing board and looked around at what i had for suspension components.  i had 2 sets of 57" ford springs, a dana 44, an 8 lug 10bolt front, and a 14 bolt rear.  i also have been collectiong parts for the D44, so i now have a pass side flattop, 5.13 yukon gears, a 5 series carrier, and an master install kit for it, but it was 6 lug.  anyway, here are my progress pics of the SAS with a D44 front and 14 bolt rear.  front will be welded and the rear has the stock gov loc.

im going to use the 8 lug outters front the 10 bolt and put them on the D44

here is the D44 stripped of everything.  center to cent on the springs wil be 32".  as you can see the housing has been ground down and is ready for new perches.

here is the front crossmember.  its 2x2x.250, 3x4x.250, and 4x4x.250 for the hangers.  i had it welded at the local metal shop.  they did a nice job.  everything out the door was $75.

Money Shot!!   now to just get the damned thing geared.

here is where the passenger side shacle will be mounted.  it will be mounted with a hanger much like the Sky rear shacle flipkit, only slightly redesigened.  it should be ready by monday night.  again the local metal shop is making it for me.

here is how the spring sits in there.  i have a feeling it will want to go neg when flexing, but i can also add 2 more leafs to it.

nother shot of all my axles.

hey, tell me what you think, im pretty proud so far, not major flop ups, so its going good.  and for those of you thinking it should use the 10 bolt front and not worry about swaping i will if i can get some gears, a carrier, and an install kit for what i can get out of the D44 stuff. . . but i cant, so time is nothing to me, so i will be switching it all over shortly.

im also looking to shorten the wheelbase to 120, and this means cutting the bed, not a flatbed fan.  well see how it goes.

for the rear im going to use teh other set fo 57" fords with an inboard version of the sky flip kit int he front, and exaclty the same for the rear.  or ill just get the 63" chebby spring kit from him and modify it to fit a 3" wide spring 3/ 3.5" bushings.

Just curious what drugs you took that made you wanna use a 10 bolt?    Nate

10 bolts and 44's are just about the same.  A little different parts, about the same strength, but the 10 bolt is a lot harder to find parts for.  Thats why most guys go towards the 44.

they are going to be a D44 front and a POS 12bolt rear.  scrap the 12bolt for a 14bolt, i can get you one for $75, and find some 8 lug outters for the D44.

10 bolts use almost identical parts as a d44 does but the strength is lost in the ring & pinion dept.  The 10 bolts wont hold up.  Nice build up so far, I was wondering what was going to happen to that trruck.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

well, i am healed from my back.  the doc says i can work tomorrow, but being a roofer, and it being winter its looking like i might not be working tomorrow soooooo, i will be working on the truck all day most likely (dont you just love those days when all you have to do it work on your truck??).  im going to hang the front springs, fab up some spring perches, and make some spring plates.  i *think* i might be able to run my draglink to behind the tierod for a while so im not worring about histeer for the time being, or moving the box for that matter.

also, im going to switch the 6 lug rotors back on for the time being because i have wheels with tires on them for 6 lug and not for 8.  but thats temp.

so basically, it should be pulling out of the garage tomorrow (at 0psi of course)  damn, it got kinda big while it has been sitting in the garage heheheheheh.

Do toyotas flex????

went to get the brake line adapters but they guys were usless and ended up giving me the wrong ones at $4 a piece.  anyway.  im going to do the brake system this weekend.  then im going to get my flattop milled, drilled, and tapped, then buying histeer and moving the box.  after that its on to the rear, and then getting tires and gears.

that easy right??

i have an update. . . . .

finally got my tires.  they are used, but they were $90 a piece, so i couldnt pass is up.  anyway, they are 38x12.5x15s.  the wheels are rock crusher 15x10s.  they were brand new.  i had to grind the front calipers and brackets, but not so much that its unsafe.  i get the other 2 wheels on tuesday, so ill get some flex pics then.  all i need to do next is bold the bed back down and rewire the rear lights.  bleed the brakes . . . . . again. . . . . .(i think i have a leak somewhere) get my rear gears and regear both axles, and get a front dirveline.  also im ging to make some sliders and bumpers as well.  i figure i should have it all done by may.  also i need to replace the tranny and xcase, but i have all that and that will only take 2 or so hours. and i need to move the front shackes front under the frame to through it.  i have all the materials, i just need to get around to doing it.

what do you all think?

yes, im changing it front shackle under the frame to shackle through the frame.  on top of being stronger, look better, and get rid of those cheesey shackles it will also lower the front about an inch and rotate the pinion up just a hair.  it should be easy enough to do, i have all the materials bough, cut, and drilled, hell i even have one of the holes already drilled in the frame for the sleeve.  i just need to get  my welder up and running again and weld it all in there.

yes, the spring perches on a 10 bolt front is 31 or 31.5 on center and on a yoda it is 29.5 on center.  so i know for a fact the fron will need to be changed, also the rear will need to be pointed up so you will need new perches anyway.

could the perches be reused?  i am doing a sas on an 86 4skin.  could the frame tubes be set in such a way that i would not have to mess with the perches

with the front axle yes, that is probably what you will want to do.  you can keep the perches on the front axle and just use shims to adjust your caster.

for the rear, i dont recomend using the stock chevy perches due to the fact that they are out board of what the yoda is.  if is a hassle make make out board hangers and ultimately you will lose flex

the tank is fine where its at.  dont mess with inboarding the springs.  just keep you hangers directly under the frame and you will be fine.

i have dont a lot of progress on this lately.   i should throw up some more pics.
