I am working on building my $50 front axle now. I need rotors for it. I dont know exactly what year it is, it's got to be an 80-83. When I went to look up the rotors for it I noticed a different part number for 79-80 and for 81-85. There both a solid rotor and the same diameter. I assume they are the same thickness as there is just one caliper number for 79-85. What is the difference? And if it is an 80 can I just put the more common 81-85 rotors on it?

Early rotors have 2 bolts holding the rotor to the hub, later ones have 6 bolts.

Just went and looked, Yippi!!! I got the two bolt 1980 version. So is this design pretty weak or what? Should I scrap these in favor of later ones?

Oh yea. Is there anything else different about this 80 version that I should know about, spindles, knuckles, third, shafts, etc. before investing money in it?

Nope, basically all the rest is the same stuff. I wouldnt worry about the 2 bolt vs. 4 bolt, both are plenty strong.

Hey on the plus side those early rotors are cheap. I was going to just do the ifs hub thing, maybe later, I want gears, a locker, and new trunion bearings right now.

I havent used solid rotors in a long time, I still have all hte old ones lying around though. When I forst started messing with my 81 last summer I niticed that one rotor was about 1/4" thick! Glad a I kept all the old parts hanging around then.

At least you were smart enough to keep all your old crap, my dumb ass sold EVERYTHING when I moved. I should have just made a dozen more trips back and forth and kept it all.

on on a slightly different subject...what kind of upgrade rotors can i get for my '79? aren't there a certain year land cruiser rotors that'll work?

i know that also brembo makes aftermarket rotors for 70s-80s cruisers with slots or holes...

All cruiser rotors are 6 bolt as far as I know. I had to drill the smaller 6 bolt pattern into my fj rotors when I put them on the 94 hubs. It would be very simple for you to do the same type of thing.

I swapped 1983 FJ-60 vented rotors, hubs, and calipers right onto my 85 with no trouble.

if i remember right i think cruisers had the same break(pre-81, 81-up) as pickups. not completely sure though

If you wanna go with the wider vented rotors, I think 81 was the first year cruisers got them. I researched it and all the bearings and seals are the same, so it's a straight swap, Nate

76 and up have vented rotors. Most people believe its 78+ that got the fine spline pinions and disc brakes but every 76+ Ive ever seen has been so equipped.
