Kill switch
« on: Jan 17, 2011, 05:39:35 PM »
Ok so my thought is to run a switch that interrupts the coil, would a simple toggle switch work for this and take the power? The idea to have it so the motor will crank but it will not start until the switch is on.

Yes it would. I've done it before using a push button switch, turn your ignition on...push button start. Easy to hide too!

make sure you use a push button as suggested so the starter does stay engaed longer than needed.

why would it stay engaged longer then needed?
i want it so that the engine will still crank, it just won't actually start. so if i use a toggle and have it engaged shouldn't it work just like it would without a switch in it and with it disengaged shouldn't it try to start but not be able to make a complete cycle? i still want the key to be what starts the engine

yota4x4sc-ya i was planning on having 2 switches just wasn't sure what to hook the 2nd one to but the fuel pump is a great idea.
toyota41180-i'd highly recommend it. i plan on not driving this truck until i get a kill switch especially after i had my 81 stolen.

He probably thought you were going have it hooked up to your starter...therefore the starter would stay engaged until switched to "OFF" position.

that makes sense. i was debating on having a switch between the ignition and the started for the second switch but im liking the fuel pump switch idea better.

x2 on the fuel pump. from what folks tell me around my area, kill switchs are more of a burden to an owner than to a burgler.

ya i don't doubt that but the longer it takes for someone to break in and get it started the more of a chance they have of getting a caught so it's worth it to me. i might do a alarm as well though.

my neibor is a retired car theift, he recomended me to use a push switch, and put it some where really odd. He said with kill switches all they have to do is find it, cut the wires and twist them.

Interrupting the coil, fuel, ignition is a bad idea. Stick with the starter. dangerous to have component failure at 55 and lose your brakes and steering. Happened to a friend (relay crapped out) and he took out a family because he couldnt stop in time. Luckily nobody was seriously hurt.

There is a reason that you can not but an alarm anymore with IGNITION KILL. Its all starter kill now.

ya finally got the done with everything and looked for where to put the kill switch. have to go into the wiring harness way to much for a started switch, don't want to mess with the fuel pump cause it's in the tank and the coil is the only part i could see that would be useable for a switch but i don't like the idea of having the switch going out at 60 mph+ so i think im going to do a alarm with the window censor and possibly a steering wheel lock

Two switches, one disables the starter the other switch activates the horn when trying to crank the engine, that way when the thief hops in and tries to start it he will honk the horn. :gap: Granted a starter kill will only slow the proccess since if it is a stick it can still be push started.

You can put a switch on anything and not have an issue.  Most people have issues cause they don't do it right.  Just make sure you use heavy duty switches, and heavy gauge wire.  And a relay if needed.
Email Seabass and he can give you all the schematics on what to do and what to use.

Eventually I'll have switches on my Fuel Pump, Coil, and Starter.
