5VZ Swap
« on: Jan 11, 2011, 09:59:27 PM »
so I know you guys have probably heard this question hundreds of times but I bought a 3.4 the other day for $550 it's going into my 91 with a 5 speed and it came from a automatic 97 4runner and i didnt come with a wiring harness I need to know if I can use a automatic wiring harness with a manual ecu and make it work out.

You can repin the auto harness to work with the manual ECU, but it is a pain. And depending on waht year the auto harness (97 it seems) the plugs copuld possibly be different than the manual ECU that you purchase. Early year Auto ECU's used the same plugs so I think you will be ok.

This is exactly what I did. I have a 92 pickup, 97 Runner 3.4 and used the stock auto harness but repined it to a 97 manual. I bought a 97 Manual ECM and everything works fine and passed the strict California laws on motor swaps. Get the same year and model ECM just manual as there are differences between the Runner and taco motors such as EGR etc.

I have a fairly decent swap thread and detail the process from beginning to end...........well almost end cause I dont think that it ever ends......Not the swap but everything else.............I address exactly what you asked about http://www.yotatech.com/f160/had-officially-began-3-0-auto-3-4-manual-92-ex-cab-196823/index11.html

You should get a check engine light like that. Do you? Everyone that I have seen do that does.

In California, a Check engine light is an automatic fail for emissions testing so that cannot be done if you want to be legit and legal. If you dont care about the light being on then thats probably the best way to go. It would just drive me nuts on a daily driver.

Take the bellhousing stiffeners off your 3.0 and bolt them onto the 3.4 block.  There is supposed to be a flywheel cover sandwiched between the bellhousing and bellhousing stiffeners.

I don't know if "bellhousing stiffeners" is the correct way to refer to them but I heard that once and it stuck in my head... They're just the little brackets held on by two 14mm's and bolt to the bellhousing with another two 14mm's.  It makes sense if you look at it.
