Wagoneer D44's specifics.
« on: Jan 10, 2011, 02:21:38 AM »
  Whats up guys.

Im picking up from google that the Dana 44 and toyota axel are really a matter of preference.

The vehicle of choice for me to get a 44 would be A jeep wagoneer. Pre 1980 I belive to have the passenger side "drop" the toyota requires *correct me if Im wrong*

Also the older the Wagoneer the better as they had vacum assisted lockers and eventually switched to drivers side drop after 1980.

The Wagoneer im looking at is a 65. so im sure it has the drop on the right side, but Im wondering if its a 28 spline 44 or a 30 spline 44. what would be the bad part to this old of an axel?

all my info is off the top of my heard from a light night google search. but any help from the Vets on this board would be helped, thanks and have a great week!

Try calling O&R 4wd in Bloomington california. Ask for Bucky, he can probably answer your question. They built both of my 44's when I had my jeep. He's an old timer with a ton of info. I hope that helps you.

Pre-1980 should all be passenger drop.
No Wagoneers had vacuum actuated lockers, but many had a vacuum disconnect on the long side axle which is junk and you want to avoid. It can be identified by a large cast section on the tube with a vacuum actuator.
Any open knuckle disc brake Waggy 44 should have 30 spline axles as far as I know. 1965 would closed knuckle. Note that there were 2 different widths of Wagoneers also, narrow and wide track so make sure you get what suits your needs.
Those axles should run you about a hundred bucks each, maybe a little more if they have been removed and you don't have to deal with the hassle. That's the going rate at a junk yard and they are thick out there.

Here's some info from Bill Avista on Pirate. Looks like you'd want a 1974 or newer for the larger/higher spline count outer shafts.

Jeep Front axle Dana 44

Used in 1967 to 1991 FSJ (J10, J20 trucks, Wagoneer, Cherokee)

Ring gear diameter = 8.75"

Available ratios = 2.72 - 5.89

Width: Varying widths from 58" - 62"

Note: Beginning in 1980, the differential was on the driver's side of the vehicle Closed knuckle till 1969; 1970 and later are open knuckle From 1967-1969, all 44 fronts used the 5-74x u joint inside of a closed knuckle From 1970-1973, all 44 fronts used the smaller 5-260x axle shaft u-joint (same size as a Dana 30)

Axle shaft diameter = 1 5/16"x30 spline Inner; 1 1/4"x19 spline Outer (1974-present), 1 1/8"x10 spline Outer (1967-1973) Note: 1967-1969 trucks had 1 1/4"x19 spline Inner axles

No limited slip or locking differential was offered.
