If you can't figure out where to buy an axle, should you really be doing a swap yourself? Just sayin'.
A front axle housing is not hard to find. I just sold the one from my 85 pickup last week after having a custom one made. Depending on your budget you can get one made or check out an aftermarket one from some one like Rock Assault.
look for a 84 or 85 front 4wd axle.. that is the best years... the bottom is fully trussed, making it stronger slightly
yes it is a good idea, but that is not where they bend most of the time.
thus trussing them like above

where ya located
I was bench racing with a well known, highly respected fabricator one day about trussing Toyota front-ends and he said, "More Toyota housings get screwed up by some idiot welding those trusses on then, then get bent from wheeling". I no longer truss them. The one that is on my rig now is bent and it happend as I was coming off the trail on to pavement, I hit a two foot tall rock at about 20 MPH, hit it and bounced so hard it threw my dog out the half door and on to the pavement. She was OK, just a rude awaking.
You dont just burn a hot fatty
i couldnt agree more with twisted tack one spot then at op corner tack and go inch at a time like weld one spot then do op side ect hope u get what im sayin
