SAS?
« on: Dec 27, 2010, 08:03:42 AM »
Well I'm getting ready to do my first SAS.
But i do have a problem, where can i find a good solid front axle to do it?
Is there a Toyota dealer somewhere that just sells them?
I don't know where to get one so anything would help.
Thanks

Try your local junk yard, or the classified section here, on Pirate 4x4, or Craigslist.  For starters.

Good Luck

If you can't figure out where to buy an axle, should you really be doing a swap yourself?  Just sayin'.

:hammerhead: I'd try doing more research before diving into it. That was the FIRST thing I did 3 years before I even got to SAS my 92. I did a lot of research on what works and what doesnt. Study up on your stuff and you wont have to ask where to get a mini toy axle to do your swap

look for a 84 or 85 front 4wd axle.. that is the best years... the bottom is fully trussed, making it stronger slightly

heres what style of axle you want, notice the bottom truss as yota4x4sc stated, goes all the way under the drivers side spring perch. the rest of the trussing is added on to prevent bending these little guys. start lookin! :beerchug:

Take your time to find a 84-85 axle.....get everything you need before you start cutting. Do more research......
besides here, you can google "toyota sas" and there will be a few photo step by that you can follow.

A front axle housing is not hard to find. I just sold the one from my 85 pickup last week after having a custom one made. Depending on your budget you can get one made or check out an aftermarket one from some one like Rock Assault.

if you've got the coin go with a diamond axle housing and have bobby long make you some custom axle shafts

yes it is a good idea, but that is not where they bend most of the time.

I was bench racing with a well known, highly respected fabricator one day about trussing Toyota front-ends and he said, "More Toyota housings get screwed up by some idiot welding those trusses on then, then get bent from wheeling". I no longer truss them. The one that is on my rig now is bent and it happend as I was coming off the trail on to pavement, I hit a two foot tall rock at about 20 MPH, hit it and bounced so hard it threw my dog out the half door and on to the pavement. She was OK, just a rude awaking.

IF you can't find one locally then try here.   I know they have plenty of them but shipping will be a bit pricey.

YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

So, other then the knuckle balls, where do you suggest gusseting it, if at all?

Here is a pic of my front axle I have not bent it yet and I beat the hell out of my truck. I think that putting any more metal on your axle is great if you have the money but you should get the 84-85 axle and the conversion kit with all the goodies. Do your swap first then add the extra stuff after you have finished your swap, make sure your ready to do your swap before you start chopping off your ifs!!!

Thats why you have to know what the hell you are doing when you weld on an axle.... You dont just burn a hot fatty two foot bead long all at once. You do an inch or so at a time and let it cool. If you dont have the skills or knowledge then dont attempt it. Its not the trussing thats messing them up, its the imbeciles who warp the damn housings.

But anyway, just do your research and do your swap RIGHT the FIRST time :beerchug:

If it was possible, you would make a weld on the top and a matching one on the bottom, the pull would cancel each other out. SO is it better to truss a housing that has no trusses top and bottom?
