Cant figure out whats going on with my elocker
« on: Dec 20, 2010, 07:44:29 PM »
Hey guys, I posted this up on pirate too but since I am a desperate fool I am posting it here too.

Anyhow, I just wired up the front hi pinion elocker I have. Everything went good (it seemed anyway) and it was straight forward. I used the inchworm kit.

Anyhow to use the inchworm kit you use the factory lower locker harness (on the diff) and cut off the upper plug to splice the wires in. I did that but didnt notice one of the directions said to identify one of the blue wires that was in the center of the plug. I never noted that before I cut the plug off. So I took my best guess.

I could hear the locker working with the switch but I couldnt get it to engage both tires. I had the front on jackstands and would slowly spin a tire as I flipped the switch. I could hear it click but it would never engage the other tire.

So I swapped the blue wires I guessed on, and now I have nothing. So I am assuming my first guess was the right one.

But now I am frustrated and have no idea where to go from here.

You fellas have any ideas?

put the blue wire back the way it was.  then pull the lockout on the side not engaging and double check that its not busted.

Could you guys clarify a little bit? What do you mean by 'the lockout on the side'? The motor? Hubs?

THANKS FOR THE HELP!! Can you tell, electrical terrifies me!

im assuming he meant the lockout hub.  I had the same problem with my rear e-locker.  turns out the locker motor was not sliding the locking fork over far enough to lock the axles together.  try pulling the locker motor off the 3rd member. then with the motor plugged in, flip the switch and unlock it.  while the motor is off the third, make sure the shift fork in the third is slid all the way over to the unlock position. then put the motor back on and see if it works.  basically the shift fork needs to be perfectly in sync with the gear on the motor in order for it to lock and unlock properly

Ok that makes sense Pumkin (wow that sounds awkward  :stopit:) Since I manually unlocked it a few years ago it might have move around a little bit. I just had the hubs apart and I know they work beautifully so thats a go.

Well Balls. I switched the wiring back to the way it was previously working, pulled the motor and it still doesnt work. I could not spin the gear by hand either, but I dont know if that is normal or not.

This confirms my suspicion. The last time I tried it before I switched the wiring the first time I thought it quit working, but i was kinda already cutting it apart so I never was able to confirm.

So where do I go next? The fuse supplied in the kit isn't burned out. Could I have burned up the motor?  :scared:

I am freaking out man.... :conf:

I am curious though since I haven't looked at this stuff in about 3 years. Is there any slick cable setups out there yet?

I think sky manufacturing had a really nice one but they just stopped making it, my friend got the last one. He's thinking about copying the design though just for a few people

have you taken the cover off your e-locker motor?  if not you should do that next and see if you have rust or corrosion on the inside of the motor. it doesnt take much for the little worm gear to freeze against the ring gear inside the motor.  once that happens, your motor wont work.  take it apart and clean it out, and re-grease it
