Water temp gauge?

Ok, so I'm starting to question the water temp gauge in the dash.  It sits on cold for a while, and then it just goes up to the midway, where it should be.  But there are times that I swear the heater is putting out some serious heat, like the water temp is way higher than what is showing on the gauge.

I'm thinking on getting one of these pillar pods. http://www.truckpillars.com/page0/page0.html

So, how would the new temp gauge hook into the system?  (Sending unit?)  Does it just hook up to the factory sender?  Or will I need to drill and tap anything?  So, a little quick online search on yotatech says to hook it into the t-stat housing for the turbo model, which is the housing I have.  Hmmmmm!  :headscratch:
I've never had to deal with after market gauges.  Except for tachometers.

So, what is your experience with this?  And what gauges to look into?  I don't want to go expensive, just functional without looking like crap.

Unless its made for a toy, your gonna need to tap or adapt.  I think the best way is to get into the water jacket in the block.  You may have to to get a tee and hook your sending unit to an existing sensor.  Hopefully someone can speak up and give an easy solution, like a plug somewhere.
