how to pick properly sized wheels
« on: Nov 29, 2010, 10:57:15 PM »
So I'm planning on getting some wheels from a yard or one of these crappy ghetto tire places for my '81.  We got a lot of them here in Memphis (tire stores not '81's).  But I'm expecting an "as is" cash deal.  What do I need to measure to make sure they fit properly?  I'm running 6 lug with 15" rims now with 31/10.5 R15 Goodyear AT's and not looking to buy new tires.

Thanks for the help!! I'm just paranoid about getting some wheels that don't fit just right, and I'm already tight on cash as is.

youre probebly gonna want like 3.75" backspacing or maybe a little less and get some that are 8" wide . Make sure you get the right lug pattern   toyota/chevy

Yeah, the back spacing is the main thing I'm worried about.  Not gonna be able to test them out if i get them from a yard.

So the chevy 6 lug will work on the toyota 6 lug??? ..................assuming you can get it on the hub housing/center cone.

Not always, sometimes the center hole in the Chevy rims is smaller. Get a cheap pair of calipers from a place like H-F. Measure the hole on the wheels you now have and duplicate that on the wheels at the yard. 3.75 BS or less is what you are looking for.

Also measure the bolt pattern, all 6 lug rims aren't equal, the Dodge pattern wont fit.

I agree w/ these guys about the back spacing.....and depends on what size lift you have on your truck, What gears are you running.

It also depends on what brake setup you running too!  Stock brakes, just about any wheel will work. (6 on 5.5 lug pattern)
But if you got the larger V6 caliper/rotor setup, back spacing is gonna be crucial.  Most after market aluminum wheels have deep areas cut out in the back, that steel wheels don't have.  The possibility of running spacers is possible too!
