Hello and is it okay to shoot my truck?
« on: Nov 26, 2010, 12:29:15 PM »
Hi,

New truck acquisition, My son has handed me an 88 toy 4x4 with 22RE, 5 speed and a Marlin Crawler transfer case upgrade. (I know about that, cuz I done it)

In any case, he has hit his frustration level over the rear axle. oil leak at the rear seal saturated the brakes and so on.  He pulled the rear axles and he rebuilt the right hand side with no problems.  But the left axle will not go together and play nice.  We have the axle assembled with the bearing and retainer, but this is where he hit a snag and now I am wrapped in his problem. The axle bearing retainer will not press completely down to seat against the bearing. Lacks about a quarter inch.  The retainer made it past the snap ring groove before it decided to stop.  I used a twelve ton press on this retainer and other various methods and still no luck.  Is there something not mentioned in the shop manual regarding this axle setup or some bit of folk lore that a new guy should probably know about?  Really need to get the axle back in the truck, its much too cute to turn into a pickup barbieQ.

Well, thanks for any help and I do a search and found the step by step instructions with pictures in your postings, but this is really kind of past that.

Have a great Thanksgiving.

Regards,

Mac

I find a piece of pipe that just fits over the axle shaft but will hit the retainer and use it as a slide hammer.
