Off road blender
« on: Nov 25, 2010, 11:49:38 PM »
Alright so I have seen people with their gas powered blenders that they take camping to mix up killer margaritas.  I think this is a great idea but what a pain in the ass it is to have to bring that big contraption with 2-stroke gas on the trail.  I am in the process of building an air system out of an ac pump on my toyota when I came up with the idea of an air powered blender.

I was just wondering if anyone has done it before?  I was thinking of getting some sort of air tool from harbor freight and converting it to work with a blender.

Any ideas??  suggestions??

The simplest thing to do would be to attach a die grinder to the shaft of the blender, and a regulator to the handle of of the grinder, so you would be able to adjust the speed of the blender.

I have thought about the gas ones, but they do seem to be a bit of PITA to set-up, use, etc.  I gave a 12vlt(high end model) to a buddy and his wife for Xmas a few years back, but they never remember to bring it, so I don't even know if/how well it works.

I used a plastic blender pitcher, cause I didn't want the chance of breaking glass on the trail.  Under the pitcher is a plastic blade/gear that usually engages the motor, I pulled it off.  This left a 3/16 shaft,  I used an air drill to drive it from my compressor.  I used an air drill, cause of its variable speed.  You can get fancy and built a stand, but I just use a buddy.  You can use a die grinder, depending on the shaft below the pitcher (most die grinder accept a 1/4" shaft).   :beerchug:

I havent checked this for myself but I hear that penumatic die grinders spin the opposite way than the motor on a standar blender.  Anyone else run into this problem??

My blender does in fact go left (blade shape), use an air drill, they go pretty damn fast, are reversable.  I am sure HF has one for cheap, that might last a few pitchers.

If you haven't noticed I'm not into the cool factor, more into the cheapest easiest route. Plus when you are on the trail and break out your blender you still turn into Mr. Kool.

Just listen for the ice being crushed and there we are, we've been doing it for ever. You can't beat a frozen Strawberry Margarita with fresh strawberries on the trail.
