How Do I Find The Gear Ratio of D44

So I am trying to figure out how to decode my Dana 44 housing on my 79 RC D44 to find which ratio it has.
I am re-cooping from a hip injury so I cant be wrenching on it to pull it apart to find out.

So is there a way to decode it to find what it has?

these are the codes I have found on the housing.

4 4  -  9 F

C 3 8 5 6 1

ive searched google, pirate, explorerforum, etc... nothing..

No ratio tag on the cover I assume?

unless there is a tag the only way really you are going to know for sure is by pulling the cover or spinning it.. if its stock..... chances are it probably has 3.54's as ford put that in just about everything


also look for the BoM on the axle tube. the other numbers you gave us dont tell us anything

No BOM that I can find.... BRB. will there be a stamp on the gears or anything if I pull the cover? I dont know whats keeping it from spinning.

It will be stamped on the ring. Also you can divide the number of teeth on the ring by the number of teeth on the pinion.

was able to get the ring to spin and the cover off.... here is what the ring reads.

5 10 79 DANA D  33844 B3R92 46-13

damn... still need a new carrier. I can remove these and sell them though they are in good shape no chips from what I could tell.

what do all of those numbers mean?

iirc  5-10-79 is the date of MF   the 33844 B3R92 is prob just the code/serial number type thing and 46-13 is the ring/pinion teeth count  .. if you have those numbers its easy to see what gears you have as you just devide teh 46 by 13 and bam your ratio..  like 46 / 13 is 3.538461538461538  but easier to just round up to 3.54
