I'm glad you posted this.

I used the oil lab when I worked at a Cat dealership and went over 10K miles on my synthetic oil after seeing results. Changing it any sooner was just a waste of money. The longer change intervals offset the extra cost of the synthetic oil.

Everybody I know said I was crazy and full of..........you know.

I'm sure I could push it to much closer to 20,000 miles but my goal is simply to be able to go about six months between changes.  If you look at the dates of the samples you'll notice that the Sequoia gets a ton of miles put on it.  It already over 500 miles since the oil change last Friday and we really didn't go anywhere.  I'd be changing the oil every 4-6 weeks if I didn't go past the wasteful 3,000 mile old standard.

New Rule of Thumb:

5,000 miles with any name brand conventional
7,500 miles with any synthetic.

Are you using a special filter?

Are you using a special filter?

I run a Mobil 1 M1-209 filter that is an oversized filter.  It costs the same as the M1-203 that is the stock size, I believe.  I don't think it would really matter much if I simply ran the Toyota OEM or other standard filter.  The engine is clean and I'm sure the filter is no where near it's limits.  I just run it to be on the safe side.
