A 3rd gen pickup is going to have the 3.0 v6. They can still be a decent engine, but are notorious for having problems.

I've been driving a 3rd gen extended cab with a 3.0 for 10 years now.It hasnt been a terrible motor but I still regret not waiting to buy one with a 22-RE .They are alot more reliable and cheaper to build. If you get a 3.0 to run duals you'll have to get a 3.0 to 4 cylinder adaptor plate and it's just alot more $$

I have had two trucks both with the 3.0 and I have had no issues and both ran great, my only complaint is they can be hard to work on. as for the duals the adapter can be had for 200-300 dollars, thats all that you need that is different from installing them on the re.

and a 23 spline input shaft which is a good thing but more $$$$

Yes I forgot about that, but as you stated 23 spline is great to have

You will deffinately have a better drivetrain with R-series tranny and the 23 spline transfercase and the V6 rear, it will just cost more to build it.If money is no issue for you than go for it.Swap in a 3.4 than your good to go.

if the 3.0 is maintained than you should be fine

The 3.0 does/did have its issues w/head gaskets and burnt exhaust valves, both of which are easily resolved.  If you know the service history of a 3.0, and it has had a the HG recall done by a Toyota dealer, it should be an alright rig to buy.  However if you are new to mechanics, I would recommend the 22re, it is easier engine to learn on and maintain than the 3.0 is, and as mentioned cheaper to build.
