« on: Oct 31, 2010, 02:11:43 PM »
hey all which would be better for me for the first year or so wheelin. 5.29s or duals? i plan on doing both but i just dont have the coin to do em at the same time. so which would you rather have in a extra cab exo`d 85 4cyl 5 speed on 38s or 39s?....right now the rears have 4.10s in em so the previous owner says i have not checked yet.

If driving it on the street, I would say gears first. 39's and 4.10's would be a bit hard on clutches. Plus it would be kind of a turd. If strictly off road, I'd say duals.

With that size tires, 5:29's either. Even so your gears are going to be a tall for wheeling.

A W56 with stock ratio duals and 4.10's in first low =84 to 1
With a single stock case and 5.29's =48 to 1
There is a downside either way, but stock duals would do pretty well off road I'd say with 4.10's.

If you put a 4.7 kit in the rear case while you're in there you'd get 174 to one with 4.10's. I'm at 119 to 1 and I find it sufficient.
My Jeep was 36 to 1 so I feel like superman.

no street 100% trail toy!
In that case, dual T-cases with 4.70's in the rear case.

I would not even bother with gears at all if its a trail only rig.  Duals with 4.7's in the rear, and call it good!

A 22r/re no matter what gearing you do whether it's t case, axles, or both is not going to be impressive in the mud in my opinion. There simply isn't the hp.
But then again I avoid mud like the plague so I have no first hand experience. All the people I know that are into that run big motors in old chevy trucks and the like.

Here's the thing... if you set your truck up right you won't need to spin in the mud.  I can creep through most of the "big mud holes" around here in 2WD low range.  I wouldn't worry about it unless you want to mud race...  in that case you don't wan't a Toyota anyhow unless it has a small block in it.

Any dummy can spin in the mud.  A well setup truck with good gearing, lockers and a good driver can wheel everything with ease.

no its not a racer or a bogger but if i come across a nice hole i am gonna wanna play. and when i say spin the tires i just mean enuff to clean em...i guess i can always look at it in the way if i get it done and dont like it i can put my 2.5 ton rockwells under it and the small block sitting in the corner of the garage..

Dude, 4.88s with 35s and a Dual with a 4.7 would be the most stout setup. Stick with a smaller sized tire like a 33 but a wide 33 and run duals first with the stock ratio in the diffs. I ran 32x11.50s,4.88s with dual 2.28s and lockers and its amazing how much more control you have over just a single 2.28. IMO with 39s, 5.29s, lockers and a stock case your going to be breaking things, so do the case first.  :king:
I've got the most liftedest truck in town, that little jap truck done stand no chance gainst my Chevy. My Chevy gots a V8 more lift an bigger tires, and an exhaust system, whats yer tuna can got, a V4, and them tires look like they is offa Saturn Corulla. The dealer instulled my lift, so ya no its done right, you just try to foller me throo them rocks an see what a reel truck can do.
